De Gruyter Rolls Out New Division Offering Custom Publishing Services
De Gruyter introduced Sciendo, a new division of the company that “provides specialized custom publishing services and solutions for third parties, especially academic and research institutions, societies, university presses, conference organizers and individual authors. In addition to services for journals and books—including open access—other allied services, such as self-publishing for individual authors or complete service packages for conference organizers, are offered as well.” Sciendo will have its own editorial team, editorial policy, and production, marketing, and distribution teams.For more information, read the news.
Yewno Launches Research Competition for High School Students
Yewno announced a competition for high school students working together on research projects. The 2018 Do Yewno? Competition is open to groups of two or more students age 19 and younger, and projects are due by midnight PST on June 15, 2018. Entrants are given free access to Yewno Create, which they can use to collaboratively construct and submit articles—they can share notes and drafts, view saved concepts in collaborators’ research, and use a chat platform for discussion. Research will be conducted using Yewno’s database of more than 200 million scholarly articles.For more information, read the press release.
Microsoft Trust Center Offers Resources on GDPR Compliance
The Microsoft Trust Center has a section on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that is designed “to help you focus on your core business while efficiently preparing for the GDPR.” Microsoft notes, “We believe that the GDPR is an important step forward for clarifying and enabling individual privacy rights,” and it is “committed to GDPR compliance across our cloud services when enforcement begins May 25, 2018. …”The Microsoft Trust Center offers information on how the company’s products can help others comply with the GDPR, as well as resources such as webinars, videos, white papers, and FAQs. The center’s website outlines changes under the GDPR; GDPR-compliance best practices; information on managing compliance, getting ready for GDPR accountability, and preparing for the GDPR; and support for GDPR compliance. Senate Committee on the Judiciary Passes Marrakesh Treaty Implementation Act
The Copyright Alliance praised the Senate Committee on the Judiciary for passing the Marrakesh Treaty Implementation Act (S. 2559) by a vote of 20-0. Keith Kupferschmid, the Copyright Alliance’s CEO, says that this act “will build upon existing international copyright principles to provide persons with print disabilities with access to a wealth of published works, which might otherwise not be available to them, in a manner that is respectful of the rights that copyright owners have related to those works. We now urge the Senate to swiftly consider and pass this important legislation.”For more information, read the press release.
Springer Nature Makes Selection of 2017 Articles Free Online
Springer Nature began its third Change the World, One Article at a Time campaign, which is designed to facilitate the use of research-based solutions to solve real-world problems. The campaign will make more than 250 articles published in the company’s journals in 2017 freely available until July 31, 2018. They were “handpicked because the research within them has the potential to have a significant impact on society’s grand challenges,” according to the press release. “As one of the world’s largest publishers focused on academic research, educational content and science journalism, Springer Nature’s dissemination and application of evidence-based sustainability research is an initiative intended to help support the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.”For more information, read the press release.
OCLC Blog Explores Intersection Between Wikipedia and Libraries
Writing on OCLC’s blog Next, OCLC Research senior program officer Merrilee Proffitt presents three reasons why libraries and Wikipedia need each other: Wikipedia’s scale, passionate community of volunteers, and values-centric vision.Proffitt writes, “Wikipedians and librarians share similar passions and purposes. NISO Plans New Project on Scholarly Communication
NISO (National Information Standards Organization) voting members “approved a new project to develop a common means to easily transfer manuscripts between and among manuscript systems, such as those in use at publishers and preprint servers.”Stakeholders who work in manuscript-processing areas (production systems, preprint servers, etc.) are encouraged to provide input for a NISO Recommended Practice that would provide an open protocol for members of the scholarly research ecosystem to use when communicating among various platforms. Clarivate Analytics and REDIB Debut Ibero-American Journal Rankings
Clarivate Analytics and REDIB (Ibero-American Network of Innovation and Scientific Knowledge) unveiled the first Ibero-American Journal Rankings. Powered by Web of Science data, the rankings cover Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries in Latin America as well as Spain, Portugal, and Andorra on the Iberian Peninsula and will be released annually.“The launch of this ranking represents major progress in REDIB’s mission to promote technological innovation in publishing-output tools for the Ibero-American region,” says Ramón B. EDM Council Studies Data Management and the GDPR
The Enterprise Data Management (EDM) Council published a report that identifies “the critical role data management must serve for firms to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR),” according to the press release. It was developed by 40 expert practitioners from 24 member firms and found that “because the privacy function is executed across the enterprise wherever personal data is managed, compliance to GDPR is only achievable where a comprehensive data management framework is in place.” The report download comes with two supporting documents: GDPR Requirements Analysis Quick Reference Guide and GDPR Work Group Analysis Worksheet.For more information, read the press release.
W3C Publishes Updated Roadmap of Web Applications on Mobile
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) released a new version of its Roadmap of Web Applications on Mobile, which shares the technologies the organization has developed that increase the capabilities of web applications, especially with regard to mobile usage. This version addresses feedback from the January 2018 publication and has updates that follow the evolution of the web in the past few months, as well as more coverage of accessibility aspects.For more information, read the press release.
