APA and Center for Open Science Make Psychology Research More Open
The American Psychological Association (APA) teamed up with the Center for Open Science to give authors the option to use open science badges, create an APA repository for sharing content, and designate a preprint server for APA journal articles.Open science badges will be offered to authors from a selection of APA journals who share their data or materials or preregister studies as ways to promote transparency in scientific research. More journals will provide this option in the future. The APA data repository, hosted by the Center for Open Science’s Open Science Framework (OSF), will allow researchers to work privately with collaborators or make parts or their entire project publicly accessible. Research data, protocols, and materials will all be stored in the repository. The OSF’s PsyArXiv will be the preferred preprint server for APA journals. The organizations plan to integrate some APA journals’ submission portals into the server. Authors can post working papers, unpublished work, and preprints, as well as revisions to posted documents and supplemental materials. For more information, read the press release.
RedLink Updates Remarq Collaboration Tool
RedLink rolled out the latest release of the Remarq collaboration tool, which features more robust collaboration components, support for author and editorial updates, and administration and analytics tools for publishers and editors. SAGE Adds Special Education Journals to Its Portfolio
SAGE expanded its partnership with the Hammill Institute on Disabilities to publish Rural Special Education Quarterly (RSEQ), Beyond Behavior (BB), and Behavioral Disorders (BD), which join 15 other special education journals published through this partnership.RSEQ, the official journal of the American Council on Rural Special Education, covers topics, issues, and trends in service delivery or personnel preparation for rural special education and disability services. BB is geared to teachers, administrators, counselors, and others who work with children who have or are at risk for emotional and behavioral disorders. BD reports on original investigations and theoretical papers relating to the education of students with emotional and behavioral disorders. For more information, read the press release.
eLife Commits to Open Source Content Editing Project
eLife joined the Substance Consortium, which provides support for Substance, a JavaScript library for web-based content editing. This open source project supplies custom text editors and other systems that enable knowledge creation and dissemination.“As a member of the Substance Consortium, we look forward to supporting the creation of valuable new tools and influencing current practices in the authoring, editing and production workflows for document-centred publishing,” says Giuliano Maciocci, eLife’s head of product. CABI Updates CAB Thesaurus With New Content
CABI (Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International) introduced the 2017 edition of the CAB Thesaurus, which is the world’s largest source of terminology for the applied life sciences for academic, corporate, and government librarians. It now features a controlled vocabulary resource with nearly 2.7 million descriptive terms, more than 166,000 distinct concepts, and more than 132,000 synonyms. These are translated from English into 10 European languages. More updates include the addition of another 800 taxonomic names of invasive plants and 600 medical terms (with a focus on neoplasms, medicinal drugs, and metabolic markers related to disease).For more information, read the press release.
Network Alliance Helps Companies Guard Against Cybersecurity Attacks
Network Alliance introduced Cybersecurity Insurance Review, which “provides an evaluation of a client’s cybersecurity insurance policy in partnership with a leading provider of network security and privacy liability insurance, to ensure coverage aligns with needs, such as recovery, arising from an attack,” including those that are socially engineered or caused by human error (such as downloading a malicious file) or other scenarios that most policies do not cover. Network Alliance’s cybersecurity experts give clients recommendations for areas of missing coverage and possible attacks not covered in their current policy, estimates of the monetary cost of breaches, and other suggestions.For more information, read the blog post.
Contests for Combating Climate Change Are Now Open
Climate CoLab, part of the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence, launched seven contests whose winners will be invited to MIT to share their work and will become eligible for a $10,000 grand prize. Thomas Malone, director of the center, says, “People from all walks of life—for example, policymakers, artists, engineers, students, or retired professionals, among others—all have valuable insights to offer and are invited to enter the contests on their own or with a team. Alternatively, they are welcome to form teams with other members of the Climate CoLab community.”The contests will focus on the areas of land use (agriculture, forestry, and waste management), transportation, buildings, carbon pricing, energy supply, adaptation, and shifting attitudes and behaviors toward climate change. DPLA Announces Hub Network Membership Program
The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) plans to launch the Hub Network Membership program on Sept. 1, 2017. It was designed to create closer, more formal collaboration between DPLA and Hub Network members and give these members a voice in the direction of the DPLA. Nimbus Hosting created an infographic to illustrate the importance of the new transparent secure sockets layer (SSL) certificate initiative for ecommerce brands. Elsevier Acquires bepress
Elsevier acquired bepress, giving the service access to its technology and analytics so it can enhance its offerings and expand to more institutions. bepress will be better able to address institutions’ promotional needs, including preserving their research data and outputs and attracting students, faculty, and grants. Elsevier’s research products—Scopus, SSRN, SciVal, etc.—“will enhance the breadth and quality of the reach, promotion and impact services bepress delivers to its customers,” according to the press release. bepress will help Elsevier drive adoption of its research data management tools.
