Yewno Discover Interface Gets Update
Yewno will roll out a new release of the Yewno Discover Research Application on July 1, 2017. According to the press release, it features significant user interface enhancements, including the following:- New Knowledge Map design with improved usability and performance, including advanced tools to view and structure Knowledge Maps and improved Accessibility compliance;
- A more visual and interactive experience for users including the introduction of images;
- Increased customization features to improve research effectiveness, with new concept and document filtering options and annotation functionality for users to tailor to individual research interests and goals;
- Easier sharing and collaboration with enhanced export functionality and direct URLs to drive straight to concepts and documents; and
- New institutional branding options to showcase the value of the library.

European Commission Puts Research Infrastructures Back on the Map
The European Commission (EC) is funding a project that will continue the development of the MERIL (Mapping of the European Research Infrastructure Landscape) portal and database. The initial phase of MERIL began in 2010, when its goal was to build an up-to-date database of European research infrastructures in the sciences.MERIL-2, the current 3-year phase, has an expanded team that “will provide the means for making informed assessments and decisions about the research infrastructure landscape in Europe, and to encourage accessibility, new partnerships and collaborations within the scientific community,” according to CORDIS, the EC’s Community Research and Development Information Service. MERIL-2 plans to cover more research structures and provide more accurate information on them. “The usability of the portal is also being developed through improved functionality and standardised data sets, which it is hoped will enable MERIL to become a hub for European research infrastructure information, resources and networking.” For more information, read the press release.
Clarivate Analytics Rolls Out 2017 Journal Citation Reports
Clarivate Analytics published the 2017 Journal Citation Reports (JCR), its “annual update of the world's most influential and comprehensive resource for information on highly cited, peer-reviewed publications and the source of Journal Impact Factor (JIF) scores.” To compile the JCR, Clarivate uses 2016 citation data, impact and influence metrics, and data from the Web of Science. It features 11,459 journals from 81 countries that cover 236 disciplines. There were 132 journals getting their first JIF scores in this report, and 66% of all journals had a year-over-year increase in their JIF scores.For more information, read the press release.
JoVE Science Education Adds New Series and Updates Others
JoVE introduced a new physics series to its catalog of video resources for scientific research and education. This series, along with updated clinical skills and psychology series, are available in the JoVE Science Education database. Students and faculty members can use its 400-plus videos to enhance learning in a variety of subjects. Later in the year, JoVE Science Education will add new biology and chemistry content, as well as a new series on engineering.For more information, read the press release.
OCLC Plans App for Student Library Workers
In August 2017, OCLC will launch Digby, a mobile app for student library workers that will be part of WorldShare Management Services (WMS). Initially, it will be available for WMS libraries in the U.S., with other countries to follow. Digby gives students instructions for handling pull-list and reshelving tasks and allows them to scan library materials in the stacks, which saves time and reduces the amount of paper slips they need to use.For more information, read the press release.
Public Libraries Prioritize STEM Education
The American Library Association (ALA) announced that 75 U.S. public libraries were selected to participate in the STEM education initiative NASA@ My Library. They will receive resources, training, and support to help them bring STEM learning opportunities to their patrons, which includes underserved areas. Those selected receive two NASA STEM Facilitation Kits for hands-on programming under the themes Sun-Earth-Moon Connections and Expanding Your Senses; a tablet preloaded with apps, games, and visualizations; a $500 programming grant; and more.For more information, read the press release.
Demco Creates Discovery Tool for Libraries
Demco Software launched DiscoverLocal, a tool that helps public and academic libraries get higher rankings in search results. This gives their collections, programs, and events more visibility, which could translate to more usage of the library’s resources and facilities, as well as help librarians with marketing initiatives. According to the press release, “The library uploads metadata about its collection via MARC records and Demco Software does the rest of the work. Search engines crawl these tagged resources and promote them to local community members, or students and faculty for academic libraries, as they search for events, programs, book titles and media on their favorite search engines.”For more information, read the press release.
W3C Announces Publishing Summit for This Fall
In San Francisco, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is hosting its first publishing summit, Nov. 9–10, 2017. The W3C Publishing Summit “will show how publishers of all types are using today’s Web technologies, including EPUB, to make their publications more effective and their workflows more efficient, and cover developments coming soon in Web publications, EPUB and the overall Open Web Platform.”Registration is now open, and speaker and session proposals are due by July 15. Note Hound Study Companion Gets Enhancements
A special note directly from Note Hound creator Graeme Summers …The Note Hound highlight manager is now easier to use and includes two new features: 1. Generate print edition citations from Kindle highlights Fetch and make Kindle highlights “quotable” with page numbered, print edition, in-text citations in APA, Harvard, or MLA citation styles. 2. Work with any writing program Note Hound was originally designed to work exclusively with Zotero. Now, it can bring your Kindle notes and highlights to any reference manager, note program, text/markdown editor or word processor. Google Makes Job Hunting Easier
TechCrunch reports that Google “launched a new jobs search feature right on its search result pages that lets you search for jobs across virtually all of the major online job boards like LinkedIn, Monster, WayUp, DirectEmployers, CareerBuilder and Facebook and others. Google will also include job listings its finds on a company’s homepage.” This feature is available when typing search phrases in English such as “jobs near me” or (for example) “writing jobs.” You can refine your search with filters such as location, industry, and employer. Additionally, the results contain Glassdoor and Indeed ratings for companies.For more information, read the article.
