Wiley Pilots Content Sharing for Authors, Subscribers, and the Media
Wiley introduced a content-sharing pilot for Wiley Online Library that gives authors and subscribers (both individual and institutional) a tool for sharing full-text articles for free with nonsubscribers. A media-sharing pilot will follow soon. Authors will be able to share all journals in Wiley’s portfolio, while subscribers and media outlets will be allowed to share 180 titles during this pilot. Subscribers can share via email, social media, and scholarly collaboration networks that have signed the Voluntary Principles for Article Sharing on Scholarly Collaboration Networks. Media outlets can link from research news to studies on Wiley Online Library so they can view the original findings for free.For more information, read the press release.
Kudos Streamlines Uploading of Plain-Language Summaries
Kudos is working with Aries Systems to give publishers access to Aries Systems’ Editorial Manager, which allows plain-language summaries to be captured at the point of article submission as part of authors’ existing workflow. The summaries are then promoted through Kudos after publication. Nearly half of the authors in Kudos’ pilot for assessing interest in these summaries were in favor of them because they could increase readership of articles.For more information, read the blog post.
Elsevier Gives Plum Analytics a New Home
Elsevier acquired Plum Analytics from EBSCO Information Services in order to give more researchers and institutions access to Plum Analytics’ suite of altmetrics solutions. The terms of the purchase were not disclosed. Elsevier will integrate Plum Analytics’ metrics into its Mendeley, Scopus, ScienceDirect, SciVal, and Pure products and the sites of its journal and society partners. More than 60 million Scopus articles, 13 million ScienceDirect articles, and researchers’ profiles on Mendeley will benefit from the addition of altmetrics. VitalSource Shares Expertise With Education Company
VitalSource partnered with LearnLaunch to create improved learning experiences for students. VitalSource has informally worked with LearnLaunch in the past to share expertise and provide mentorship. It will participate in LearnLaunch’s community events and biannual Demo Day, and LearnLaunch will bring the company new perspectives and ideas for innovation.For more information, read the press release.
Anythink Libraries Spreads Kindness
Anythink Libraries developed the One Kind Word Project, which is running from Feb. 6 to Feb. 11, 2017, to “help spread kindness and compassion throughout the community,” according to the press release. It was inspired by the Japanese proverb, “One kind word can warm three winter months.” As part of the project, each Anythink location is providing materials for creating custom cards with kind messages that will be distributed to organizations in the community who have people in need of cheering up. Additionally, local artists are hosting workshops at library locations on calligraphy, embossing, and screen printing.“Small things can make a big difference, and words are powerful,” says Pam Sandlian Smith, Anythink’s director. “The kindness of strangers can turn a bad day into a reason to hope. The Met Expands Its OA Policy
The Metropolitan Museum of Art adopted a new OA policy that makes all of the museum’s public domain artworks available for free and unrestricted use, remixing, and sharing via the Creative Commons Zero (CC0) designation. It affects more than 375,000 images from 5,000 years, which can now be used for scholarly or commercial purposes. To make them more discoverable, the Met is partnering with Creative Commons (which developed a CC Search for the Met), Wikimedia, Artstor, the Digital Public Library of America, Art Resource, and Pinterest. Preservica Commits to Digital Preservation Group
Preservica joined the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) as the DPC’s first partner for its Commercial Supporter Programme, which was created to work on issues facing the digital preservation community and long-term digital preservation. Solutions providers and DPC members can share insights and ideas, as well as spread awareness about and create best practices for digital preservation. Informed Librarian Online Offers Access to Emerald Publishing Titles
The Informed Librarian Online service is providing its premium members with access to 17 Emerald Publishing ejournal titles that are part of the publisher’s Library Studies collection. Useful for information researchers, educators, librarians, and students, the journals cover topics such as library entrepreneurship, library assessment, library space, leadership, and library publishing that affect libraries worldwide.For more information, read the press release.
SAGE Brings Back MethodSpace Community
SAGE launched the redesigned MethodSpace site, a free online community for social and behavioral science researchers. It now features a hub for information on how social science research uses Big Data. The Big Data Hub helps researchers stay up-to-date on the methodological advances being made in computational social science. MethodSpace has an enhanced taxonomy for searching, as well as new features and content such as the Methods in Action blog series.For more information, read the press release.
GOBI Makes Spanish-Language Ebooks Available
GOBI Library Solutions from EBSCO joined forces with DIGITALIA to make thousands of Spanish-language academic ebooks available through the GOBI acquisitions tool. GOBI is building up its non-English titles and now offers nearly 20,000 ebooks from about 150 publishers (including publishers exclusive to DIGITALIA) in Spanish and other languages. DIGITALIA has strong social sciences content, as well as Spanish and Latin American literature.For more information, read the press release.
