Glasstree Debuts New Ebook Service
Glasstree created an ebook service that helps academics publish their research quickly and affordably. The company partnered with Creative Commons to offer a range of gold OA options with highly competitive processing charges. The full-service option for $3,000 features manuscript assessment, copyediting, a designated digital object identifier (DOI), Kudos tools (bibliometric and citation tracking, etc.), and double-blind peer reviews. With Glasstree, authors get 70% of the profits from sales and can publish within days or weeks.For more information, read the press release.
Educopia Institute Reveals Results of LAM Study
The Educopia Institute published its “Self-Identified Library, Archives, and Museum Professional Development Needs 2016 Edition” report, which finds that 69% of the library, archive, and museum (LAM) professionals surveyed have a high level of interest in continuing education and professional development. Cost is a major factor in determining what opportunities to pursue. There were more similarities than differences noted across the LAM space in terms of what the respondents need, including better technology training, physical preservation principles, and conservation skills.For more information, read the press release.
FIZ Karlsruhe Translates Global Patents Into English
FIZ Karlsruhe—Liebniz Institute for Information Infrastructure and SCIPAT teamed up to offer translations of patent documents to FIZ AutoDoc customers. Initial patent applications are typically published only in the language they’re written in, and relying on machine translations could result in misinterpretations. SCIPAT promises high-quality, human translations for FIZ AutoDoc users, who can request entire documents or excerpts and get results in 3 days. Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Thai, and Vietnamese are the current languages that can be translated into English, with other languages available on request.For more information, read the press release.
Adam Matthew Rolls Out East India Company Archive
Adam Matthew introduced East India Company, its new collection of primary sources from the British Library. It covers the company’s entire history, including early trade associations with Japan and Indonesia, its establishment by Queen Elizabeth I, its tea trade with China, and the Indian independence movement of 1947. Module 1: Trade, Governance and Empire, 1600-1947 is now available. Module II will publish in 2018, and Module III, the final part, will publish in 2019.For more information, read the press release.
The Obama Administration's Web Archives Find Homes
The Obama administration’s pages on the White House website, which were removed following the new president’s inauguration, are archived at obamawhitehouse.archives.gov. In addition, The Verge reports the launch of archivesocial.com/whitehouse, which stores all of the 250,000-plus Instagram, Twitter, Flickr, Facebook, Google+, and Pinterest posts by President Barack Obama and his administration in a searchable collection.For more information, read the message and the article.
OCLC Purchases ILL Solutions Company
OCLC acquired interlibrary loan (ILL) solutions provider Relais International, Inc. to offer its member libraries and Relais customers more resource-sharing options and capabilities. Canada-based Relais has been working for 20-plus years to provide solutions for ILL and consortial resource-sharing services, such as its Relais D2D (Discovery to Delivery) product. Jisc Expands Wi-Fi Access for Its Members
Jisc announced the upcoming availability of the cloud-based iPass Wi-Fi service. iPass has partnered with Jisc to provide unlimited Wi-Fi access from 57 million hotspots in 120 countries for all Jisc members, academic institutions, and association partner organizations for flexible package prices. This will give researchers and educators high-speed connectivity while at conferences or collaborating on projects that is safer than free public Wi-Fi and cheaper than using mobile data.For more information, view the iPass website.
ByWater Solutions Provides Customers With Free SSL Certificates
ByWater Solutions is offering Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates to all of its hosted partners for free, making their URLs “https” instead of “http.” It will acquire each certificate from Let’s Encrypt and use it with all configured URLs on the partner’s site, as well as handle the certificate’s automatic renewal process. Existing customers will be transitioned to the secure connection over the next several months, while all new customers will be brought on with SSL in place right away.For more information, read the press release.
SirsiDynix Develops Mobile Discovery Solution
SirsiDynix teamed up with SOLUS to work on BLUEcloud Mobile, a patron discovery app that builds on and enhances BookMyne+. SOLUS’ library app expertise complements SirsiDynix’s BLUEcloud architecture, which BLUEcloud Mobile will be integrated into.For more information, read the press release.
ICMA Issues Report on Libraries and Local Governments
ICMA (International City/County Management Association), the Aspen Institute, and the Public Library Association (PLA) released a report, “Local Libraries Advancing Community Goals, 2016,” which shares the results of a survey of nearly 2,000 local government leaders. It found that local governments see public libraries as a key resource in supporting education and digital inclusion goals. It offers three areas that would be good opportunities for libraries and local governments to work together: collaborating on community priorities, information sharing about community issues, and finding funding sources.For more information, read the press release.
