Biometrics Companies Join Forces

Precise Biometrics entered into an agreement to acquire the assets of NexID Biometrics for 32 million Swedish kronor (about $3.5 million) in cash. This purchase will enable Precise Biometrics to include NexID Biometrics’ liveness detection software in its fingerprint software products, address customer demand for fraud mitigation, and grow its fingerprint technology business.

IMLS Works Toward Universal Digital Inclusion

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) partnered with the PAST Foundation’s National Digital Inclusion Alliance (NDIA) on a pilot project for improving access to online information in the U.S. via the Digital Inclusion Corps (i.e., local digital literacy trainers). Three state library agencies and two museum organizations have joined the pilot to provide corps members to five tribal and rural communities. These members will create digital equity plans for the communities that will address issues such as affordable home and public internet access, low-cost devices, and digital literacy training and technology support.

AWS Expands in the U.K.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) created a new AWS Europe (London) Region for its U.K. customers, which brings AWS’ total technology infrastructure regions to 16. Now, developers, startups, enterprises, and all types of organizations can use the AWS Cloud to run applications and store data on local infrastructure. They can also use Amazon CloudFront edge locations in the U.K. to deliver websites, applications, and content to end users, with low latency. The addition of France and China regions is expected in the coming months.

Altmetric Unveils Top 100 Research Papers of the Year

Altmetric released its annual Top 100 list of published research papers that have generated significant online attention and discussion from all over the world, including from post-publication peer-review forums, patient advocacy groups, mainstream news media, and social media. The most widely talked about was President Barack Obama’s paper on healthcare reform. Seventy-five of the papers had U.S. authors, and 49 papers discussed medical and health sciences topics.

Gale Premieres Interactive Science Products

Gale introduced new digital resources, Gale Interactive: Chemistry and Gale Interactive: Human Anatomy, which combine Gale’s curriculum-aligned research content with interactive 3D models for guided, interactive lessons. Students can zoom in on, rotate, and otherwise explore these models. The Chemistry product offers a visualization experience with atoms and molecules—students can combine elements and observe the reactions. The Human Anatomy product provides virtual, 3D dissections and covers more than 4,300 structures and 13,500 landmarks in the body.
