Springer Nature Forms Combined Reference Works Program
Springer Nature merged Palgrave Macmillan’s reference program and SpringerReference to create the Major Reference Works (MRW) program. The MRW portfolio of 500-plus individual works includes trade and academic references from the fields of science, technology, medicine, the humanities, business, and more. SpringerReference contributes titles such as the Encyclopedia of Sustainability Science and Technology, and Palgrave Macmillan contributes The Statesman’s Yearbook, The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics, and others.For more information, read the press release.
The Opportunity Project Gets New Tools and Support
The White House is expanding the Opportunity Project, which President Barack Obama launched in March 2016 to facilitate the creation of tools that will leverage the expertise of technologists, local governments, and community leaders who are using open data to expand the public’s access to digital information about affordable housing, quality schools, jobs, and more.It features 29 new digital tools from companies, nonprofit organizations, and students that use federal and local data to address information needs identified by several government agencies. The Department of Commerce has agreed to lead the Opportunity Project, the Department of Education is offering Civil Rights Data Collection APIs, and the Department of Labor is offering an OpenSkills API. Simba Information Releases Report on OA Publishing
Simba Information published a report, “Open Access Journal Publishing 2016-2020,” which finds that the number of OA articles published each year is growing at double the rate of the total amount of articles and that OA articles already represent about one-third of all articles published. The report estimates that by 2020, there will be more than 3 million OA articles published. It also features an in-depth review of 10 leading OA publishers such as Springer Nature, PLOS, Wiley, and Elsevier.For more information, read the press release.
ACRL Diversity Alliance Provides Opportunities for Librarians of All Backgrounds
ACRL launched the ACRL Diversity Alliance for academic libraries that are committed to hiring more qualified candidates from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. Participating libraries will create at least one resident position that will provide an opportunity for someone from these groups to gain the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed for working in academic libraries. Libraries in the alliance will also commit to sharing their networks and connecting at conferences.For more information, read the press release.
ProQuest Rolls Out Catalog-Enrichment Service
ProQuest introduced Syndetics Unbound, a catalog-enrichment service that draws on the strengths of the Syndetic Solutions service and the LibraryThing for Libraries system. Libraries can use it to embed rich information and guided discovery into their existing catalogs—such as summaries, professional reviews, read-alikes, and reading levels—giving patrons a convenient way to find out about global books and media. Current Publishing's Magazines Go Digital
Exact Editions and Current Publishing launched a digital expansion that provides a new subscription option for Current’s heritage-focused magazines: Current Archaeology, Current World Archaeology, and Military History Monthly. Readers can view the magazines via website, Android, and iOS app editions and access comprehensive digital archives for each title that date back 50 years. IMLS Begins Study of Public Library Data Collection
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) joined forces with COSLA (Chief Officers of State Library Agencies) to develop Measures That Matter, a project that will examine, evaluate, and map the landscape of data collection for public libraries in the U.S. They will work with library stakeholder groups to create a Library Data and Outcomes Action Plan for a coordinated approach to data collection. Eventually, they will release a framework that has outcomes, outputs, and indictors that consistently and effectively demonstrate the role, value, and impact of public libraries.For more information, read the press release.
The National Book Foundation Studies Translated Works in the U.S.
According to Melville House, the National Book Foundation is embarking on a study of translated books in the U.S. It will look at translation trends, how many translated works are published and purchased, how the translators’ network functions, and aspects of the translation business (e.g., diversity and the characteristics of translated works’ publishers), among other topics.For more information, read the article.
ASTM International Content Now Available Through OpenAthens
ASTM International is now providing OpenAthens subscribers with straightforward and secure access (via a single sign-on) to its library of 12,000-plus standards and related products for those in fields such as medical equipment and procedures, materials manufacturing, and construction.For more information, read the press release.
Overleaf Makes Journal Submission Easy
Authors who write for the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’s (ASBMB) Journal of Biological Chemistry can now access a custom authoring template on Overleaf’s cloud-based, collaborative writing and reviewing tool and can submit their articles to ASBMB directly from the link in the template (and download them as PDFs). The Overleaf-ASBMB partnership simplifies the submission process to the journal and provides guidance on each section of a manuscript.For more information, read the blog post.
