GPO and LC Publish Digital Versions of the Congressional Record
The U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) and the Library of Congress (LC) released digital versions of the issues of the Congressional Record that were published from 1991 to 1998 on govinfo. These issues cover the debates of the 102nd to the 105th Congresses, which included discussions on the Persian Gulf War, the Clinton administration, and the Family and Medical Leave Act. GPO and LC will continue releasing digital versions back to the first issue in 1873.For more information, read the press release.
Thomson Innovation Gets Improved Smart Search Functionality
The Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters updated its Thomson Innovation intellectual property research and analysis solution with new search technology. The Smart Search feature now allows for searching with full blocks of text, meaning users can avoid Boolean and other typical semantic queries. Smart Search extracts keywords and themes from the text blocks and feeds them into its search algorithm to produce relevant results. Plum Analytics and ACI Join Forces to Monitor Blogs
Plum Analytics, an EBSCO company, and ACI Information Group partnered to give PlumX Suite customers access to ACI’s metrics from more than 1 million scholarly blog posts. Now, researchers, librarians, and funding organizations can see who interacts with what research and what they say about it on more than 10,000 news and commentary blogs. The PlumX Suite currently monitors 4,000-plus blogs for mentions of research outputs.For more information, read the press release.
Pew Reports on Digital Readiness
Pew Research Center’s Internet, Science & Tech division published “Digital Readiness Gaps,” a new report that explores digital readiness, “the degree to which people succeed or struggle when they use technology to try to navigate their environments, solve problems, and make decisions,” according to the report’s summary. It reveals the attitudes and behaviors underlying people’s readiness and how these factors relate to their comfort level with digital tools. Pew assessed people using five main factors: “their confidence in using computers, their facility with getting new technology to work, their use of digital tools for learning, their ability to determine the trustworthiness of online information, and their familiarity with contemporary ‘education tech’ terms.”For more information, read the report’s summary.
collectionHQ Unveils Dashboard for Monitoring Collection Performance
collectionHQ launched Dashboard, a new tool that helps users quickly evaluate the progress of collection management tasks and identify trends in circulation and turnover. It offers new performance metrics displayed as interactive charts and graphs that can be filtered to show performance by location, collection, and time period. Additionally, users can share their results by exporting the charts and graphs into the Microsoft Office suite or as PDFs.For more information, read the press release.
bioRxiv Allows for More One-Click Submissions
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and HighWire Press provided their one-click submission option from the bioRxiv preprint server to an additional seven journals from the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), the American Physiological Society (APS), and PLOS. The one-click submission program is powered by BenchPress, HighWire’s submission system. Authors can use bioRxiv to submit manuscripts and metadata directly to 38 journals. De Gruyter Mouton and APA Create Language-Focused Book Series
De Gruyter Mouton and the American Psychological Association (APA) will launch a joint book series titled Language and the Human Lifespan to study contemporary research on how psychology and language intersect. The first volume, Bilingualism Across the Lifespan, will provide research results on bilingualism from infancy to late adulthood and how it affects language acquisition and cognitive development. Scientific American Broadens Its Reach
Springer Nature announced that Scientific American launched For Science, a free online version of the magazine for the Arabic-speaking world, including Egypt and the Middle East. It offers the latest science, technology, and biomedicine news from local authors and focuses on original content covering both regional and global issues. It will also provide slideshows, videos, and podcasts, as well as translated Scientific American articles.For more information, read the press release.
Adam Matthew Plans Digitization Project With the British Library
Adam Matthew will digitize some of the core series of the India Office Records (IOR) from the British Library. The IOR feature primary sources such as charters and minute books from the East India Company dating from 1599 to about 1950. Modules will include East India Company: Charters, Deeds, Statutes and Treaties c1550–c1950 and Council of India Minutes and Memoranda, 1858–1947. The project will take place over 5 years and will available online via a dedicated website starting in January 2017.For more information, read the press release.
Digital Science Works With UArctic on Research Projects
Digital Science entered a strategic partnership with the University of the Arctic (UArctic)—a cooperative network of 170-plus universities, colleges, and research institutes in and around the northern Arctic region—to advance Arctic-related research. They will conduct joint research projects and analysis based on global funding and publication data. This partnership will result in the first attempt to create a comprehensive view of Arctic research funding from around the world.For more information, read the press release.
