OverDrive Now Offers Language-Learning Programs
OverDrive signed an agreement with Simon & Schuster’s Pimsleur Language Programs to make it that resource’s exclusive non-U.S. digital wholesaler to public and school libraries (and the nonexclusive wholesaler to U.S. public libraries and worldwide corporate libraries). The programs are in 50 languages and offer ESL with 14 languages. They will be offered via OverDrive in five-lesson and 30-lesson packages.For more information, read the blog post.
New Pew Report on Americans' Reading Habits
Pew Research Center’s Internet, Science & Tech division released “Book Reading 2016,” which shows that print books remain more popular than ebooks or audiobooks. It says 65% of Americans have read a print book in the last year, 28% have read an ebook, and 14% have read an audiobook. Those who do read digitally are using tablets and smartphones more often than dedicated e-readers. This data comes from Pew’s telephone survey of 1,520 American adults that was conducted March 7–April 4, 2016.For more information, read the report’s summary.
Watch the Librarian of Congress Ceremony Live on Sept. 14
The Library of Congress (LC) will stream Carla Hayden’s swearing-in on its YouTube channel on Sept. 14 at noon EDT. Hayden, who will become the 14th Librarian of Congress, will take the oath using the Lincoln Bible from the LC’s collection. The Library of Congress Updates Today in History Collection
The Library of Congress (LC) redesigned its Today in History feature, which draws on the LC’s digitized content to describe people, events, and activities that are associated with each day of the year. Its collection can now be accessed from the LC’s homepage, has a streamlined look with improved navigation capabilities, and offers an email alert service for the daily featured items.For more information, read the blog post.
DPLA Reminds Educators of Its Resources
The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) posted a back-to-school themed summary of its recent initiatives. For example, it offers 100 Primary Source Sets with teaching guides that are designed “to adapt into a lesson to complement your curriculum, to inspire student researchers, and to deepen student engagement through inquiry-based analysis,” according to the blog post.DPLA’s digital exhibitions feature historical topics such as the first transcontinental railroad and the New Deal. Its collection of nearly 14 million items from more than 2,000 institutions “represents a rich and unprecedented mix of local, national, and international cultural heritage that offers nearly unlimited possibilities for exploration.” Additionally, the thousands of titles in the Open eBooks app are free for students whose institutions apply for the aid. Digital Science Announces Catalyst Grant Winners
Digital Science awarded a Catalyst Grant to Etalia, which is working on a cloud-based scholarly communications portal that offers personalized literature searches and enables scholarly dialogues; Simiary, which offers a software solution that uses intelligent searching to improve content discovery; and Writefull, an app that provides feedback for writers using any tool, including Word and Gmail. The grant, which gives each company up to $25,000, supports the creation of new software tools and technologies for research.For more information, read the press release.
NAMLE Prepares for Media Literacy Week
Media Literacy Week will be Oct. 31–Nov. 4, 2016. This second annual U.S. event is sponsored by Trend Micro and is hosted by the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE). Its mission is to shine a light on the importance of media literacy education and on its essential role in general education practices.The Digital Citizenship Summit on Oct. 28 at Twitter’s headquarters, using the theme Citizenship, Literacy, and Advocacy, will kick off the week. LexisNexis Adds U.K. Data to Securities Tool
LexisNexis Legal & Professional updated the Lexis Securities Mosaic research tool with U.K. filings, a comprehensive collection of more than 116,000 records from the National Storage Mechanism of the UK Listing Authority of companies traded on U.K. exchanges. Knowledge Unlatched Unveils 2016 OA Collection
Knowledge Unlatched (KU) introduced KU Select 2016, its next frontlist and backlist collection of OA content. These 343 titles covering 16 subject areas in the humanities and social sciences will be available as downloadable PDF files under Creative Commons licenses. The 147 frontlist titles will be published November 2016–April 2017, and the 196 backlist titles are from 2005 to 2015.For more information, read the press release.
ProQuest's OASIS Adds Wiley Ebooks
ProQuest partnered with Wiley to make Wiley Online Library ebooks available to buy from ProQuest’s OASIS (Online Acquisitions and Selection Information System). This brings the OASIS collection to more than 18,000 ebooks, with new titles added twice each month. Subjects covered include health and medical sciences, life and earth sciences, math and statistics, and chemistry.For more information, read the press release.
