W3C Offers Popular MOOC as Self-Paced Course
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) reopened registration to its massive open online course (MOOC) on HTML5 and web design at an intermediate level. The course can be completed at the student’s own pace. It has drawn more than 190,000 global participants since its first round.For more information, read the blog post.
Nature Publishing Group Ranks Rising Stars in Research
Nature Publishing Group (NPG) produced the Nature Index’s 2016 Rising Stars supplement, which records which countries and institutions show the most significant growth in high-quality research publications. The Nature Index tracks research from 8,000-plus institutions around the world. In the 2016 supplement, Chinese institutions account for 40 of the top 100 highest performers. The U.S. has 11 of the top 100 spots and the U.K. has nine.For more information, read the press release.
Office of Management and Budget Publishes Update to Information Management Policy
The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released an update to Circular A-130, which governs the management of federal information resources. Last updated in 2000, the circular now addresses the new ways the government deal with issues such as cybersecurity, information governance, open data, and privacy. Additionally, it gathers policy updates for federal agencies to follow into a single resource and establishes a general policy for IT planning and budgeting.For more information, read the blog post.
Education Software Companies Join Forces
Online and blended learning solutions provider Edgenuity acquired Compass Learning, an education software company, to expand its reach in K–12 education. Compass Learning’s expertise in math, reading, and English language arts joins with Edgenuity’s specialization in courseware for grades 6 to 12. This purchase helps Edgenuity meet the demands for personalized learning that adheres to state standards.For more information, read the press release.
Springer Introduces First International Publishing Project With China
Springer published HCNA Networking Study Guide, an English-language technical reference book for the Chinese company Huawei. It is part of the Huawei Certified Network Associate (HCNA) Series Certifications and provides an introduction to the basic configuration and maintenance of small and medium networks.“The cooperation marks an expansion of our publishing service for our customers, ranging from China’s academic institutions to its leading industrial manufacturers. This increasing publishing activity is taking place amid the growing role of China’s industrial sector in investing heavily in R&D and in driving innovation,” says Alfred Hofmann, Springer’s VP of publishing for computer science. “This fits exactly with our mission in China to bring the country’s best and cutting-edge research and technology into the global community.” For more information, read the press release.
Atmire Acquires BioMed Central's Open Repository
Atmire, which builds and supports DSpace repositories, acquired the Open Repository service from BioMed Central. It took over the management of support of its customers on July 28. This purchase adds to Atmire’s client base of institutions that use DSpace. BioMed Central will focus on its core business concerns, according to Atmire.For more information, read the article.
Reuters Brings Virtual Reality to Its News Platforms
Reuters and Samsung partnered on Focus 360, a program designed to incorporate virtual reality and other technology into many Reuters platforms. Virtual reality and 360-degress videos and photography will be integrated into news content from Reuters.com on desktop and mobile, the Reuters News app, and the Reuters TV app. The program will have a devoted channel on Reuters.com so users can view the complete content catalog; native placement on Reuters.tv for viewing on iPhones, iPads, Android devices, and on the web; and a full presence on Media Express, Reuters News Agency’s delivery platform.For more information, read the press release.
SAGE Research Methods Gets Redesign
SAGE created a new platform for the SAGE Research Methods library that is designed to improve discovery and the user experience. New features include a new layout developed around users’ key behaviors, enhanced content tagging to return better search results, responsive design so the library can be used on desktops and mobile, and the addition of the SAGE Recommends feature for linking to relevant SAGE content.For more information, read the press release.
HighWire Press Launches Analytics Tool
HighWire Press introduced Usage Vizor, a visual analytics and reporting tool for publishers. It builds on current offering Impact Vizor and is designed to give publishers information about how research is used at the article and category levels.
