Precise Biometrics Enters New Agreement for Software Sales
Precise Biometrics signed an agreement with Betterlife to license Precise BioMatch Mobile (for use with smartphones and tablets) and Precise BioMatch Embedded (for use with smart cards, wearables, and other products with small sensors), the company’s fingerprint recognition algorithm solutions. Betterlife will provide royalty revenue from its sales of fingerprint sensors that use Precise Biometrics’ software.For more information, read the press release.
Overleaf Helps Royal Society Authors
Overleaf partnered with The Royal Society to give authors submitting to Proceedings of the Royal Society A access to Overleaf’s collaborative, cloud-based writing and reviewing tool. They can also access one-click submission via the journal’s ScholarOne submission system as well as use the journal authoring template from the Overleaf platform.For more information, read the blog post.
U.S. Open Data Declares Victory and Shutters
On July 31, 2016, the U.S. Open Data project will end. According to the press release, the project’s initial vision, “to improve the state of open data and to help ensure that government wouldn’t let open data become a passing fad,” has been largely successful, as evidenced by the improved federal government capacity to develop data platforms and the local approach supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies’ What Works Cities project. Some government agencies and workers have not fully embraced the open data culture, seeing the release of data as a liability and risk, but efforts to codify the principle (e.g., the Open, Public, Electronic, and Necessary Government Data Act) would make “open” the norm to which compliance is expected.—Barbie E. NTIS Announces Joint Venture for Data Innovation Support
The National Technical Information Service (NTIS) is looking for joint venture partners to create products or services based on federal data. The agency wants to understand how businesses, government agencies, and other groups use government data, combining it with nonfederal data and how data is shared (e.g., visualization); interpret data in new ways (e.g., predictive analytics); and learn how the data might be used to develop new technologies (e.g., machine learning and artificial intelligence). With 20th Signature, Marrakesh Treaty Prepares for Enforcement
The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) announced that Canada has ratified the Marrakesh Treaty for facilitating access to published works for blind, visually impaired, and print-disabled readers, bringing it one step closer to becoming globally enforced. The member states of WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) signed the treaty in 2013, committing them to the creation of a copyright exception that would allow authorized entities such as libraries to reproduce works in formats that are accessible. These entities may also share works with other countries that have ratified the treaty. Now that Canada, the 20th country, has signed, the treaty enters into force in 3 months, on Sept. 30, 2016.For more information, read the press release.
ELO Digital Office Enters U.S. ECM Market
ELO Digital Office, which is based in Germany, expanded into the U.S. market for enterprise content management (ECM) software by opening an office in Boston. President and CEO Szilvia Horvath will move from Germany to head this office. “As a hub for technology and innovation, particularly in the areas of healthcare and life sciences, Boston is an ideal location to base our U.S. operations," she says. Blackboard Affiliate Enters Agreement to Purchase Higher One, Inc.
A Blackboard affiliate plans to acquire Higher One, Inc., allowing for collaboration between the Blackboard Transact business line and Higher One’s CASHNet platform for secure online tuition and fee payments, as well as for the creation of online storefronts for campus commerce. collectionHQ Teams Up With Collection Management Solution
collectionHQ partnered with SOLUS so mutual customers can use the SOLUS Library App with collectionHQ, giving them a more streamlined workflow process for collection management.
