Digital Science Throws Its Weight Behind Cloud Software for the Sciences
Digital Science invested in TetraScience, Inc., a scientific startup and Internet of Things company that introduces cloud software to laboratories by connecting and managing research equipment and instruments using the web. The company had received Digital Science’s Catalyst Grant in 2015, and it is the first winner of this grant to get follow-up funding. TetraScience will use the funding to accelerate its development and market penetration.For more information, read the press release.
Thomson Reuters Releases 2016 Journal Citation Reports
The Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters rolled out its list of the most influential scientific and social science journals for 2016. Measured by the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), which offers metrics such as the journal impact factor, Thomson Reuters evaluated 11,000-plus titles from 81 countries. There were 239 journals receiving impact factors for the first time, and 57% of all journals increased their impact factor from last year.For more information, read the press release.
NFAIS Recruits Lunch & Learn Series Presenters
The National Federation of Advanced Information Services (NFAIS) issued a call for presentations for the second cycle of its Lunch & Learn With NFAIS virtual education series, which is free to NFAIS members and available for a nominal fee for nonmembers. Presentations should “focus on new innovation or emerging technology in scholarly publishing and research; new or emerging practices for greater efficiencies, user engagement and/or improved quality; case studies that demonstrate successful partnerships or business models; industry research or studies that highlight or illuminate new thinking, analysis and innovation on the future of information services; and creative solutions to existing challenges within the information services community.” The submission deadline for the 2016–2017 series is Aug. 1, 2016.For more information, read the press release.
ProQuest Completes Digitization Project With Wellcome Library
ProQuest added nearly 10,000 digitized titles from the Wellcome Library to its Early European Books program of 45,000-plus books dating from 1450 to 1700. This digitization project with the Wellcome Library, in partnership with scanning vendor Numen, has lasted 5 years. It includes books printed before 1701, many of which are extremely rare, that cover medicine and related topics.For more information, read the press release.
Submit a Photo to Gale’s My Library Pic Contest
Gale is calling for participation in its My Library Pic contest, which is open until June 30, 2016. All types of libraries (using professional or amateur photographers) are encouraged to share a photo that shows how their institution integrates and embraces technology in one of four categories: Candid Tech (“Are your users actively and interestingly using technology in the classroom, library or on the go?”), Learning Incubator (“From early literacy programs to business start-up workshops to study groups, we know that people work best in groups. Teach us your ways.”), From the Stacks (“Whether a research paper, entrance exam, practice test, or plain old reading, how do your users read and research in the digital age?”), and Digital Ingenuity (“Show us how you used technology to make life a little bit easier for you or your users.”). “Five winners will be randomly selected from each of four categories for a total of 20 prizes,” the press release states. D&B Commits to Helping Grow Latino Businesses
D&B entered into a strategic alliance with The Latino Coalition (TLC) to bring D&B’s research, services, and tools to thousands of TLC members to help them grow or start businesses. Exact Editions released a new web reader for its digital magazines, newspapers, and books that preserves the clarity of their original layout. It has bookmarking capability, intelligent linking, advanced searching, and issue stacking for easier browsing. OverDrive Showcases Developments at ALA Conference
OverDrive will demonstrate its updated products at the American Library Association’s (ALA) annual conference in Orlando, Fla., on June 23 to 28. The platform has new curation tools and customization options; for example, library consortia members can curate their own collections that are separate from the shared collection. Libraries can opt to join the beta test of the next version of the OverDrive app and learn how to set up digital versions of book clubs to engage more patrons.For more information, read the blog post.
The Getty Research Portal Gets Upgrade
The Getty Research Portal now has more than 100,000 freely available digitized volumes on art, architecture, material culture, and related fields. It was rebuilt and redesigned with an improved user experience and navigation system to mark its fourth anniversary in 2016. For example, each digitized text has its own webpage; the site has responsive design; the search function has filters for criteria such as date and language; and edition details for books are more clearly displayed. Innovative Expands in Middle East
Innovative continues to have success in the Saudi Arabian market with the launch of the Sierra Services Platform at Umm Al-Qura University. The company is already a provider for four other universities in the region: Arab East Colleges, Bisha University, Buraydah Private Colleges, and King Abdullah Medical City.
