IFLA Opens PAC Centre at the National Library of Poland
The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) created a new Preservation and Conservation (PAC) Centre at the National Library of Poland to provide workshops and training on digital preservation and digital sustainability. This addition fills gaps IFLA identified during its review of its other PAC Centres and their activities in 2014. It is designed to support libraries in their digital preservation and sustainability efforts and in safeguarding digital cultural heritage.For more information, read the press release.
Pew Publishes Report on News and Social Media
Pew Research Center’s Media & News division released a new report, “News Use Across Social Media Platforms 2016,” which finds that 62% of U.S. adults get news from social media networks, up from 49% in 2012. In terms of distribution by networks, 66% of Facebook users, 59% of Twitter users, 70% of reddit users, and 31% of Tumblr users get news from those sites. Only about one-fifth or less of users get news from the other social media sites named in the survey.For more information, read the report’s summary.
Cengage Learning Facilitates Access to Office in MindTap
Cengage Learning integrated Microsoft’s Office suite into its MindTap learning platform, giving business statistics and computing students live access to Office from directly within MindTap. Cengage Learning is part of Microsoft’s third-party cloud storage program for Office Online, which allows students working in the MindTap Office platform to save their work automatically to the cloud. For example, students in a business statistics course can use Excel Online while solving MindTap problem sets and having their work constantly saved.For more information, read the press release.
W3C Gets New U.K. and Ireland Office
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) announced that the University of Southampton’s Web Science Institute will host its U.K. and Ireland office. The institute will help the W3C expand participation in activities, establish relationships with technology and policy leaders, and promote the adoption and implementation of W3C standards in these countries. It will also recruit and engage with members, develop educational programs about the W3C, and sponsor local events.For more information, read the press release.
Blackboard Buys Campus Retail Company
Blackboard acquired Sequoia Retail Systems, Inc., a provider of point-of-sale (POS), retail bookstore, and inventory management solutions for educational institutions, to complement its Blackboard Transact suite of transaction, security, and financial solutions. Students can use their campus ID cards to purchase items online, on mobile, or at a physical location on campus. This acquisition strengthens Blackboard and Sequoia’s decade-long partnership.For more information, read the press release.
ListaPost Users Can Now Buy Getty Images Content
Getty Images signed on as the inaugural content partner for ListaPost’s updated app for iPhones and Android devices. Its editorial content will be available for purchase via ListaPost using an API. ListaPost is a content partner for Instagram that helps users organize images into customized lists for reference and to create slideshows that they can post on social media. Now ListaPost can offer Getty’s third-party content to its users (who can also feature their own photo libraries) to augment coverage of sports, news, entertainment, and other topics.For more information, read the press release.
TLC Integrates Live Chat Service Option
The Library Corp. (TLC) announced that LibraryH3lp’s live chat service was fully integrated into its LS2 PAC, the core of the CARL OPAC environment. LibraryH3lp offers real-time reference and chat services, the widget for which TLC now allows libraries to implement in their online catalog.For more information, read the press release.
ICANN Debuts .ART Domain
ICANN (Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers) and UK Creative Ideas Ltd. (UKCI) partnered to launch and exclusively operate .ART, the first top-level domain (TLD) designed to enhance and preserve the arts and culture sector’s online presence. It will be available in fall 2016.“Our goals are to support existing museums, galleries, artists, auction houses and others in protecting and enhancing their brands, to inspire new organizations to build on .ART real estate, and to make domain names available to younger players to the art scene whose names are no longer available in other TLDs and want to immediately be identified with the art world,” says John Matson, UKCI’s CEO. IMLS Awards Service Medal at White House
On June 1, 2016, first lady Michelle Obama and IMLS (Institute of Museum and Library Services) director Kathryn K. Matthew presented the 2016 National Medal for Museum and Library Service to 10 organizations in the East Room of the White House. Oxford University Press Teams Up With Overleaf for Journal Submission
Oxford University Press’ new partnership with Overleaf will allow authors who submit work to the publisher’s Biostatistics journal to access Overleaf’s collaborative, cloud-based writing and reviewing tool via one-click entry into the journal’s ScholarOne submission system. Authors can open the journal’s template in Overleaf and immediately begin collaborating with others. Once complete, the article can be submitted from within the template, which transits all files and metadata to Biostatistics.For more information, read the blog post.
