OCLC Helps Spanish-Speaking Parents Find Books
OCLC partnered with UCI (Univision Communications, Inc.) to help parents using UCI’s Key to Success discover nearby libraries and recommended books via WorldCat. Parents can use the Key to Success Reading Log to view grade-specific recommendations and then click on the image of a book to view it in WorldCat, which shows the closest library that has the book.For more information, read the press release.
Elsevier Purchases the Social Science Research Network
Elsevier acquired the Social Science Research Network (SSRN), a scholarly research preprint repository and online community. The publisher will develop SSRN alongside Mendeley, allowing it to benefit from Mendeley’s technology platform, scholarly collaboration network, reference manager, and additional personal library management tools. Furthermore, SSRN members will be able to access Mendeley’s professional profile capabilities, person-to-person networking, and following capabilities. Elsevier and Mendeley will use SSRN to accelerate their social community strategy, access leading content, and deepen author relationships.For more information, read the press release.
NISO Produces Three Recommended Practice Drafts on Altmetrics
NISO (National Information Standards Organization) released three draft recommended practices that are now open for public comment through June 11, 2016. Alternative Outputs in Scholarly Communications: Data Metrics, Persistent Identifiers in Scholarly Communications, and Alternative Outputs in Scholarly Communications come from NISO’s Altmetrics Initiative, which aims to address any limitations hindering the adoption of altmetrics. LYRASIS and DuraSpace Dissolve Intent to Merge
The boards of LYRASIS and DuraSpace have decided not to merge the two organizations after 4 months of formal due diligence and 6 months of exploration. The press release notes that “a full merger is not currently the best way for each organization to achieve its long-term goals.” Instead, they will pursue informal collaborations that will allow each organization to focus on its mission.For more information, read the press release.
Thomson Reuters Unveils 2016 'State of Innovation' Study Results
The Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters released its seventh annual “State of Innovation” report, which covers worldwide intellectual property data—including patent application activity and scientific literature publications—from corporations, universities, government agencies, and research institutions. This year’s study finds that there has been a double-digit (13.7% in 2015), year-over-year increase in innovation of patent volume. Medical devices, home appliances, aerospace and defense, IT, and oil and gas saw the most growth. For more information, read the press release.
APA Rolls Out Data Mining Tool
The American Psychological Association (APA) launched PsycINFO Data Solutions, a publication and citation data mining service for content in APA’s behavioral science databases. These databases consist of journals from more than 50 countries that are published in more than 29 languages. Users will be able to identify trends and patterns in data from a variety of sources simultaneously, as well as access targeted reports and customized analyses.For more information, read the press release.
Gale Debuts U.S. Fiction Primary Sources Archive
Gale added the new digital archive American Fiction, 1774-1920 to its Gale Primary Sources program. It offers more than 17,500 fictional works, such as novels and short stories, as well as fictitious biographies, travel accounts, and sketches. Some are available online for the first time. Authors represented include Mark Twain, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and James Fenimore Cooper.For more information, read the press release.
AMA Members Get Free Access to DynaMed Plus
EBSCO Health and the American Medical Association (AMA) are giving all AMA members free trial access to the DynaMed Plus clinical information resource. Thanks to this partnership, registered users to The JAMA Network also get access. Thousands of images from the network’s journals will be incorporated into DynaMed Plus, making this content more accessible at the point of care. VitalSouce Rolls Out Digital Publishing Resource
Ingram Content Group’s VitalSource launched VitalSource Content Studio (VCS), a digital publishing tool for educators, academic publishers, and corporate training professionals. It is designed to improve the learning experience and outcomes with original, customizable content (which is standards-based, responsive, interactive, and conforms to accessibility standards), managed using a simple interface. Users can create content in EPUB 3 format and publish it directly to VitalSource’s Bookshelf reading system. They can also enhance existing EPUBs to enrich content with multimedia and assessment items.For more information, read the press release.
3M Cloud Library Adds Pay-Per-Use Pricing
bibliotheca will introduce pay-per-use pricing models to the 3M Cloud Library. Instead of paying for content up front in full, libraries will be able to offer titles from publishers such as Blackstone Audio and Hachette Audio and pay only when a title is downloaded. “This new and exciting model represents the perfect way to compliment the up-front purchased collection, allowing libraries to offer a much more diverse collection of material with practically no risk,” the press release states. Libraries can provide a larger collection than they would have been able to if they had to pay in advance of usage.For more information, read the press release.
