Innovative Updates Its Digital Content Product
Innovative announced Vital Release 6.4, which helps libraries of all types, museums, archives, and information centers streamline the implementation of digital asset management and institutional repositories. It is a flexible, customizable solution for increasing access to digital collections and providing a seamless user search experience. Gale Rolls Out New Science Resource
Gale introduced Gale Interactive: Science, its new resource for students that covers biology, chemistry, and earth and space science. It combines the company’s reference and periodical content (which is aligned with the national science curriculums for middle and high schools) with interactive 3D models (from Cyber Science 3D) that instructors can use in the classroom for test prep, research or homework assignments, or in-class demonstrations. Students can access tools to zoom in on, rotate, and explore the 3D models; they can use guided lessons to access related reference content. W3C and IDPF Are in Talks to Combine
The World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) director, Tim Berners-Lee, and the International Digital Publishing Forum’s (IDPF) executive director, Bill McCoy, announced their mutual interest in combining the organizations as a way to more quickly advance publishing technologies on the Open Web Platform. W3C and IDPF have been collaborating for the past 3 years to work on identifying how publishing industry technologies and web technologies can complement and help improve each other. The next step in the process of combining is to solicit members’ comments and draft a Memorandum of Understanding.For more information, read the press release.
Kudos and Thomson Reuters Pilot ScholarOne Integration
Kudos entered into a pilot integration with Thomson Reuters’ ScholarOne manuscript submission and peer review system to allow the capture and dissemination of plain language summaries for research articles, which would broaden the articles’ usage and increase their discoverability. The pilot is for six publishers, including Wiley and Emerald; they will add plain language explanations to articles during the submission and acceptance workflow. Summaries added using ScholarOne will automatically be made available in Kudos when articles are accepted so that authors can create their Kudos profile page.For more information, read the blog post.
The Getty's Catalogs Advance Its Open Access Strategy
Getty Publications launched two free catalogs that highlight items in the J. Paul Getty Museum’s antiquities collections: Roman Mosaics and Ancient Terracottas from South Italy and Sicily. These catalogs are available online or as downloadable PDFs or ebooks. Readers can zoom in on images and interactive maps, view linked footnotes and glossaries, and get 360-degree views of objects. The Getty is planning more digital open access (OA) publications for the coming years.For more information, read the press release.
Spiceworks Rolls Out Customized Newsfeed and Mobile App
Spiceworks introduced an enhanced, personalized newsfeed and a native mobile app for its IT professionals network that facilitate collaboration, provide access to technology tips, and offer information for completing projects. The newsfeed brings relevant discussions and daily technology news to the forefront based on users’ interests and the people, groups, and brands they follow.The app is currently in beta. It features unlimited access to IT discussions and insights and will soon be updated to include push notifications, advanced searching, and private messaging. Additionally, Spiceworks is offering the new Daily Challenge, a tool for testing IT knowledge on a variety of topics via user-submitted questions. For more information, read the press release.
YBP Library Services Adds Taylor & Francis Ebooks
YBP Library Services and Taylor & Francis partnered to offer 50,000-plus Routledge ebooks via YBP’s GOBI acquisition platform. Libraries can use GOBI to select these humanities and social science titles, which are DRM-free. The Taylor & Francis publishing platform can be fully integrated with YBP and other partner publishers using GOBI.For more information, read the press release.
NA Publishing Plans Rock Magazine Collection
NA Publishing partnered with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Library & Archives and Bowling Green State University’s Music Library and Sound Recordings Archives for the first in a series of late-20th-century, genre-based music magazine collections, titled Music Magazine Digital Archive: Rock. It will be composed of 10 to 12 titles from these archives that were digitized from cover to cover in high resolution and made fully searchable. The next collections will highlight folk music, hip-hop, and rap, followed by more genre-based collections from the late 20th century.For more information, read the press release.
Pew Releases Report on Long-Form News Reporting
Pew Research Center’s Journalism & Media division published a new report, “Long-Form Reading Shows Signs of Life in Our Mobile News World,” which finds that cellphone users do seem to be engaging with long-form news stories on their phones, a concern for news media creators, who have been making their content available on mobile devices. “Long-form articles get more than twice the engaged time of short-form articles,” it states, “[a]nd they get about the same number of visitors.”For more information, read the report’s summary.
Bowker Collaborates on Self-Publishing Tool
Bowker, FastPencil, and Infinity Publishing are joining forces to offer an automated self-publishing solution to small publishers and authors. FastPencil and Infinity Publishing have a platform for helping publishers simply and efficiently get their content out to the public.
