SirsiDynix Support Center Gets Improvements

SirsiDynix introduced Mentor 2.0, the SirsiDynix Support Center’s new learning management system. All SirsiDynix customers can access this new version, which has an updated user interface and simplified access to educational resources. Additional features include improved subscription access definitions, new management options, and easy access to classes.

SAGE launched SAGE Business Cases, its business case studies collection for the academic library market. It enables students and researchers to analyze real-world challenges and become decision makers in businesses of all types and sizes. In an initial collection of 1,000 case studies, the resource covers marketing, operations management, small business and entrepreneurship, international business, and other topics.

RightsStatements.org Provides Standardized Copyright Statements

The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) and Europeana launched RightsStatements.org, which offers rights statements that can be used to explain the copyright statuses of “cultural objects.” DPLA and Europeana partners that own the digital works these organizations aggregate need to be able to communicate to potential users what they are allowed to do with them. RightsStatements.org statements can help standardize the data surrounding copyrighted works.

eLife Announces New Platform

eLife built an open source publishing platform, Continuum, to replace its previous platform, which was hosted by HighWire Press. “[T]o fully explore how we might bring science to life in a digital environment, we need to have as much control as possible over the tools that we use,” the press release states. “The decision to develop our own infrastructure also came naturally once we had put into place a number of small, purpose-built solutions necessary to accommodate our growth—in publications and type of content, and demand for new functionalities.”

Congressional Chemistry Caucus Spreads Awareness of Chemistry's Benefits

Rep. John Moolenaar (R-Mich.), Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.), Thomas Connelly Jr. (executive director and CEO of the American Chemical Society), Calvin M. Dooley (CEO of the American Chemistry Council), and Eric R. Byer (president of the National Association of Chemical Distributors) created the Congressional Chemistry Caucus, which will have a launch event on April 27, 2016.

“The caucus will help inform members of Congress, their staffs and the public about chemistry’s benefits for society and the economy,” the press release states. Moolenaar and Lipinski will serve as the caucus’ co-chairs.

Boopsie Enters Middle East Market

Boopsie partnered with Abu Dhabi University to provide a customized library mobile app for Middle Eastern universities. This collaboration broadens Boopsie’s reach into a new market.

“Our partnership with Abu Dhabi University to create their mobile app was a great opportunity to help the internationally recognized university make its resources more available to researchers through a medium that continues to grow in popularity. Now that we’ve launched the app, we’ll continue to work with the University to help them further leverage this and other marketing tools to meet their strategic goals,” says Megan Vizzini, Boopsie’s EVP.

CIGI Survey Looks at Online Security and Privacy

The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) released the results of its latest study, “2016 CIGI-Ipsos Global Survey on Internet Security and Trust.” It features respondents from 24 countries, 83% of whom are calling for new rules for how companies, governments, and others use personal data. Most respondents (85%) want their government to work with other governments and organizations to make the internet safer and more secure. Only 38% of respondents trust that their internet activities are not being monitored.

ProQuest Enables Automatic Ingestion From ORCID to Pivot

ProQuest updated its Pivot research solution to include automated updates from ORCID to scholar profiles—citations added to or updated in an ORCID profile will cascade into the scholar’s Pivot profile. Pivot can use this updated information to learn more about a scholar’s research area, allowing the tool to improve its recommendations for funding sources and collaborators to users. Scholars can use the time they would have spent updating their Pivot profiles to evaluate funding opportunities.

EBSCO Indexes Time, Inc. Content

EBSCO Information Services now has the complete digital magazine archives for five Time, Inc. brands: FORTUNE, LIFE, People, Sports Illustrated, and TIME. All articles and advertisements are fully indexed, making them available for searching via EBSCOhost and EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS).

Koha Now Allows Custom Sound Alerts

ByWater Solutions announced that release 3.22 of the Koha open source ILS features custom sound alerts. Users can enable audio alerts from their staff interface and link to a web file with a .wav, .ogg, or .mp3 sound file. They can also use Koha’s built-in sounds. There are different alerts for returns, checkouts, and other functions.
