Reuters Releases Top 25 Global Innovators in Government List

Reuters announced its list of the Top 25 Global Innovators in government, compiled by the Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters. It ranks the publicly funded institutions that do the most to advance science and technology. The top government research institutions include France’s Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission, Germany’s Fraunhofer Society, and the Japan Science and Technology Agency. Some of the U.S. institutions that made the list are the Department of Health & Human Services, the Department of Energy, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

IMLS Announces Big Data Competition

IMLS (Institute of Museum and Library Services) and 15 other national funding agencies from 11 countries in North America, South America, and Europe launched the fourth round of the Digging Into Data Challenge. This competition “has provided nearly $12 million in funding for international research projects that use ‘big data’ sources and methodologies to address questions in the social sciences and humanities.”

Teams creating the projects for the challenge must consist of representatives from at least three member countries that are on both sides of the Atlantic. Projects should address a research question in the humanities and/or social sciences fields and use large-scale digital data analysis techniques to form new insights. Final applications are due June 29, 2016.

Lexis Advance Gains New Features

LexisNexis Legal & Professional released the latest version of the Lexis Advance legal information service. Its updates include greater search power, access to the entire LexisNexis News Archive, and the addition of Legislative Outlook, a new predictive analytics and data visualization tool for federal and state bill passages. This tool also helps users find relevant legislation, understand political factors that impact a bill’s movement, and anticipate future hurdles. The LexisNexis News Archive, which dates back 60 years, offers a comprehensive legal and business news collection from sources such as The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal.

Competencies Document Suggests Best Practices for Children's Librarianship

The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), released a revised set of Competencies for Librarians Serving Children in Public Libraries. Members can log in to view the full PDF on ALSC’s website.

The competencies focus on the areas of access, advocacy, outreach, inclusion, and diversity for children up to age 14. ALSC lists the skills library professionals should achieve and maintain when working with these patrons.

DeepDyve Expands Reach of Rental Content

DeepDyve partnered with MyScienceWork to integrate its article rental service into MyScienceWork’s platform. Corporate and individual MyScienceWork users, especially those not affiliated with an academic library, now have the ability to rent content from DeepDyve’s database of 12 million scientific and scholarly articles. DeepDyve rental buttons appear alongside non-open access (OA) articles on MyScienceWork.

Innovative Updates Mobile Worklists App

Innovative launched Mobile Worklists Release 2.0, which has improved list-making and sharing capabilities, on the Apple App Store. App users can create, manage, and track lists of materials; scan bar codes; and share lists to and from the Sierra Services Platform in real time.

Release 2.0 has a new user interface, the ability to email lists of specific materials (to other library staffers, faculty members, students, or other patrons), additional support for languages (such as Swedish, Spanish, French, Polish, and Estonian), and other updates.

Google Adopts Geolocation for 'Right to Be Forgotten' Search Results

According to TechCrunch, Google “is making a number of changes to how it handles links it has delisted under Europe’s ‘right to be forgotten’ regulations. Instead of simply delisting links from the various regional versions of its search engine, it will now use geolocation to remove these links from all searches that come from a given region.” The company will identify a user’s IP address and other data to restrict access to delisted URLs based on the user’s location, not on what search domain he or she is using.

EBSCO Debuts Patent-Searching Resource

EBSCO Information Services introduced Global Patents, an online database that is designed to help users such as R&D teams and corporate librarians find patent information to determine the novelty of an idea or technology. It has more than 77 million patent records, with updates added monthly. Accessible via EBSCOhost, EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS), or from within a company’s intranet, it is geared to all levels of researchers, including those without much experience with complex patent searching.

Alexander Street Adds Documentary Films Collection

Alexander Street and Docuseek2 entered into a strategic partnership to work on new products and platforms, as well as to expand higher-education access to documentary films. Docuseek2, which offers 800-plus films, will migrate to a new platform powered by Alexander Street during the next 6 months. Both companies will integrate their tools, with The Docuseek2 Collection made cross-searchable with Alexander Street’s own collections. Features on the new platform will include tools for creating clips, playlists, and citations.

Reprints Desk Acquires TRI Customers

Research Solutions, Inc. and TRI (The Research Investment) partnered to transition TRI’s article delivery customers onto Reprints Desk’s Article Galaxy platform. Article Galaxy now has the enhancement of TRI’s research capabilities to enable searching for hard-to-find documents. Reprints Desk also gets the benefit of market penetration of the energy and chemicals sectors covered by TRI.
