HighWire Press Integrates TrendMD Recommendations
HighWire Press and TrendMD agreed to a partnership that will increase research discoverability for readers. HighWire’s publishers will be able to integrate the TrendMD recommendation engine as a way to increase articles’ awareness by providing suggested articles that are personalized to individual readers’ interests. TrendMD reaches 16 million unique readers each month and generates article recommendations from 1,800 global journals.For more information, read the blog post.
Thomson Reuters Releases New Legal Products
Thomson Reuters launched two new products: eDiscovery Point and Practice Point. The eDiscovery Point platform gives law firms control over e-discovery from processing to production. Legal professionals can upload and process documents in minutes, use the data-assessment tool and predictive coding to organize relevant documents, and access powerful and accurate search using Westlaw syntax. Practice Point leverages content, expertise, and technology from Practical Law and Westlaw to provide legal professionals with the most relevant content and tools for a given task or issue. It is specifically designed for attorneys whose work involves advising, negotiating, drafting legal documents, and making sure business dealings comply with the relevant statutes and regulations.For more information, read the first and second press releases.
Library of Congress Offers Free Historical Children's Books
Cricket Media partnered with the Library of Congress to offer free digital versions of four rare 19th- and early 20th-century children’s books via Cricket’s Story Bug app for iOS devices. Story Bug combines a reading platform with video chat functionality so two users can read a story together. They share controls for turning pages and interacting with the content. GSA Sets Up Source for Authenticating Government Accounts
The GSA (U.S. General Services Administration) introduced the U.S. Digital Registry, an API-generating repository for official federal government third-party sites, social media platforms, and mobile apps. According to the GSA’s blog, the APIs can be used to develop a new set of services that does the following:- delivers authenticated information to users across platforms, languages and topics
- supports cyber-security by deterring fake accounts that spread misinformation and steal personal data
- improves performance reporting, data analysis and accessibility of public services
The registry will ensure that government platforms can be authenticated so users know they are getting official information. Agencies are currently in the process of verifying accounts to add to the registry, which aims to reach more than 6,000 records by the end of February 2016. For more information, read the blog post.
dtSearch Helps Organize Searches for SEC Filings
dtSearch Corp. partnered with AcademicEDGAR+ to integrate the dtSearch Engine into the latest version of the directEDGAR search, extraction, and normalization engine, which pulls content from millions of corporate filings made through the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) EDGAR system. The integration will give EDGAR users access to the dtSearch Engine’s unique operators.For more information, read the press release.

Bowker and Digi-Rights introduced a CopyrightsNow app for iOS and Android phones and tablets. The CopyrightsNow service simplifies copyright registration and protection for works by publishers, creators, and self-published authors, including books, blogs, essays, pieces of art, and films. Baker & Taylor Works to Improve Discoverability of Classroom Content
Baker & Taylor teamed up with Unbound Concepts to help teachers, librarians, and curriculum buyers find appropriate content for their students. The company will integrate Unbound Concepts’ Artifact Access product into its platforms so that publishers’ K–12 content can leverage Artifact Access’ taxonomy. Artifact Access goes beyond traditional metadata (subject, author, and publisher, etc.) to allow searching by additional information such as topics, themes, educational characteristics, literary elements, and teaching standards.For more information, read the press release.
Production Analyzer Streamlines E-Discovery Process for Legal Professionals
ESI Laboratory, LLC (ESILAB), part of Data Conversion Laboratory (DCL), launched Production Analyzer, a software application that helps lawyers and litigation support professionals quickly, accurately, and cost-effectively find redactions in image-based e-discovery documents. It can process a wide variety of redaction formats, such as those that are text-based and unlabeled black box redactions, and it allows users to highlight deleted redactions.For more information, read the press release.
Department of Commerce Launches Data Usability Project
The U.S. Department of Commerce announced the Commerce Data Usability Project (CDUP), which aims to make the department’s data easier to find and use, and to provide the information and tools that make the data accessible and actionable for all users. CDUP is a collection of online tutorials for students, developers, and entrepreneurs that provides the necessary context and code for them to start extracting value from datasets. The tutorials cover topics such as data on hail from the Severe Weather Data Inventory (SWDI), security vulnerability data, and demographic traits.For more information, read the blog post.
ITHAKA Takes on Artstor
Artstor will now function under the umbrella of ITHAKA, which operates JSTOR, Portico, and Ithaka S+R. The organization has previously worked with JSTOR to build and preserve shared academic resources, and they will now be in a better position to collaborate on new tools and combine their capabilities.ITHAKA assumes management and financial responsibility for Artstor, although it will retain its 501(c)(3) status as well as its existing products and services.
