OverDrive Plans Product Enhancements
Enhancements are coming to OverDrive Read, OverDrive Listen, and the OverDrive app. Read and Listen will gain an updated Menu icon with icons for Overview and Search (among other features) placed next to it, a Bookmark icon in the top-right corner of the screen, a History tab that lists places in a book a reader has visited, and other updates. The OverDrive app will address user issues such as crashing, losing position in an audiobook, and problems with syncing. Additional updates include the ability to support larger phone screen sizes and Apple’s Dynamic Type text-enlarger throughout the app for visually impaired users.For more information, read the blog post.
Knight News Challenge Funds Winning Data-Focused Projects
Knight Foundation announced the 17 winners of the Knight News Challenge, which asked, “How might we make data work for individuals and communities?” The winners will receive a total of $3.2 million: eight will get $237,589 to $470,000 each, and nine (which have early-stage ideas) will get $35,000 each. They will use this funding to explore how data is an essential element of addressing community challenges, such as police misconduct, digital privacy, and finding and using public information.For more information, read the press release.
DPLA Adds Primary Source Sets
The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) released a second group of Primary Source Sets for students and teachers in grades 6–12 and higher education. They cover topics in U.S. history, literature, and culture. Each set has an overview, 10–15 primary sources, links to additional resources, and a teaching guide. The DPLA will add more sets and features for the sets through spring 2016.For more information, read the press release.
Reprints Desk Facilitates Easier Ordering With Article Galaxy
Reprints Desk’s Article Galaxy is now integrated with Third Iron’s BrowZine Web Edition, which allows mutual customers to identify subscribed journal content in BrowZine and navigate to it in Article Galaxy, or to identify content in BrowZine to which they are not subscribed and open the Article Galaxy OpenURL order form to request an article’s PDF.In other news, Access Copyright selected Reprints Desk as its preferred vendor to offer document delivery services to Access Copyright’s Canadian customers. They can purchase content through Article Galaxy and soon will be able to view the reproduction rights available to them when they order. SAGE and Kudos Continue Their Partnership
SAGE Publishing extended its agreement with Kudos to include all of SAGE’s 900-plus journals on the platform. After a successful pilot program that began in 2015, SAGE and Kudos have decided to renew their partnership for the next 2 years. SAGE authors will be able to use Kudos’ support services for article visibility and engagement.For more information, read the press release.
CCC Updates RightFind
Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) enhanced its RightFind Enterprise content workflow solution with upgrades such as a completely redesigned interface intended to highlight critical actions users may need and simplify their workflows; improved self-help options that will reduce administrators’ support burdens, including new training videos, a new Live Chat feature available 24 hours a day Monday–Friday, and a new library of Quick Reference Guides; and an updated My Request History feature that helps users view and modify their orders and generate reports.For more information, read the press release.
figshare Teams Up With the Digital Preservation Network
figshare joined the Digital Preservation Network (DPN) as its first research data repository. figshare’s public research data will be added to DPN via the DuraSpace DuraCloud Vault deposit node (a cooperative development between DPN, DuraSpace, and Chronopolis), which means that long-term access to figshare users’ scholarly resources will be protected. DPN members will also have access to further integration with figshare for institutions.For more information, read the blog post.
Elsevier Provides Books to Accessibility Company
The Load2Learn service added titles from Elsevier in accessible formats. Supported by the U.K.’s Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), Load2Learn helps students with sight loss and dyslexia, as well as others who cannot read standard print, find books they can read at the same time as their classmates. Teachers can download the textbooks and accessible images for free.For more information, read the press release.
Blackboard Learn Debuts SaaS Options
Blackboard added two new options for deploying its higher education-focused learning management system via SaaS: Blackboard Learn SaaS Plus and Blackboard Learn SaaS Advantage. These options will be available in two tiers with varying features and service levels (such as zero-downtime upgrades, continuous delivery of regular bug fixes, and increased scalability), giving customers a way to experience their current version of Blackboard Learn in a more flexible and customizable way.For more information, read the press release.
D&B Launches Credit Monitoring Platform for Finance Departments
D&B introduced D&B Credit, a cloud-based credit monitoring and risk reporting platform for CFOs and finance departments in any industry.
