Disney Ebooks Come to hoopla
hoopla added hundreds of ebooks from Disney Publishing Worldwide. These include stories about movie franchises such as Frozen, Toy Story, Maleficent, and Star Wars. Library patrons now have access to more than 380,000 movies, music, ebooks, and other digital media. They can use the hoopla app for iOS and Android devices to borrow content for their smartphones, tablets, and Apple TVs.For more information, read the press release.
The Information Governance Initiative Publishes Annual Report
The Information Governance Initiative (IGI) announced the availability of its 2015–2016 annual report. Based on surveys from information governance (IG) practitioners and providers, it offers comprehensive research on IG as a concept, profession, and market.Key findings include opinions about the important role of the chief information governance officer, the emerging category of IG software, and how IG spending and revenue are growing. Apple Commits to Using Clean Energy
Apple created two programs, designed to reduce the carbon footprint of its Chinese manufacturing partners, which will avoid more than 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gas pollution until 2020. The first program will expand the company’s clean-energy investments by adding more than 200 megawatts of solar projects. The second program is an initiative to encourage its manufacturing partners to become more energy efficient and use clean energy.The company also built 40 megawatts’ worth of solar projects in China to offset the electricity used in its Chinese offices and retail stores, making all of its operations in the country carbon neutral. Lexis Advance Updates Go Live
LexisNexis Legal & Professional updated Lexis Advance with new capabilities and resources designed to make it easier for legal professionals to find, share, and use information efficiently. For example, an Advanced Search tool helps users look closely at specific segments of documents by restricting queries to the title of a news article, the names of attorneys in a case law opinion, or specific dates or date ranges.Other enhancements include additions to Lexis Advance Practice Pages (antitrust, data privacy, environmental law, and government contract pages), increased folder storage limits (to up to 2,000 documents per folder), and the ability to export files directly to Dropbox. Peaxy Hyperfiler 3.0 Provides New Data Services
Peaxy released version 3.0 of its Hyperfiler software platform, which helps enterprises find, manage, store, mine, and reuse exponentially growing data assets. Its new data services include index and search functionality, high-level security, and support for advanced analytics in Hadoop or Spark.“Search was the next natural step to empower users to more easily find information they need,” says Manuel Terranova, Peaxy’s president and CEO. “We hear business, research and engineering leaders saying that the most valuable people in their enterprises are losing far too much time looking for digital assets. IMLS Fosters Extension of STEM Programs' Reach
IMLS (Institute of Museum and Library Services) provided a nearly $150,000 grant to the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) in part so it could help seven science centers and museums in California, New York, and Hawaii develop a pilot project for finding new ways to introduce young people in low-income neighborhoods to STEM programs and careers. AmeriCorps VISTA members will study the reach of existing science center STEM programs and identify community organizations that could help attract more low-income youth.For more information, read the press release.
Odilo Broadens Spain's Ebook Lending Program
Spain’s Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sports chose Odilo to bring digital content to the country’s public libraries with the eBiblio Madrid service, which is powered by the OdiloTK digital asset lending and management platform. eBiblio Madrid offers free access to ebooks and e-audiobooks from all of the major Spanish publishers, and Odilo created a branded end-user portal and exclusive mobile app for libraries to encourage the discovery of and engagement with digital content.Libraries can use Odilo to purchase local content, magazines, movies, music, newspapers, and more. Cisco Plans to Acquire Network Security Company
Cisco intends to acquire Lancope, Inc., a private network security company that provides network behavior analytics, threat visibility, and security intelligence to enterprises. Cisco’s portfolio of security solutions will add additional protection capabilities, such as access to Lancope’s StealthWatch system, which finds suspicious traffic patterns in networks to help detect attacks.Lancope employees will join the Cisco Security Business Group under the leadership of its SVP and general manager, David Goeckeler. Thomson Reuters Streamlines Healthcare Industry Analysis
Thomson Reuters rolled out the Healthcare Intelligence application for Thomson Reuters Eikon to improve workflow for financial professionals. It provides information on current and in-development pharmaceutical products by leveraging content from Cortellis. Along with offering a dashboard view of top companies by drug sales, as well as the number of drugs, deals, and active R&D pipelines for specific indications or diseases, the app links to company pages that display information such as a summary of drug patents, drug development deals, and clinical trials.To create the new app, Thomson Reuters held discussions with healthcare financial research analysts. They indicated a need for financial market and healthcare data to be embedded together as a better indicator of market size and scope for particular indication or disease areas. Springer Nature Debuts Related Content Service
Springer Nature released an interactive Related Content service on SpringerLink—first to articles in the biotechnology collection and soon to the rest of the collections. Researchers can use it to find relevant scientific articles with the UNSILO semantic discovery engine. They can filter similar Springer documents by concept and visually explore documents that describe similar concepts with the new Relationship Map.Springer Nature and UNSILO are currently working on new features for increasing discoverability across Springer Nature’s product platforms.
