TLC Implements Bar Code Scanning in CARL-Connect Products
The Library Corp. (TLC) introduced 2D bar code scanning in CARL•Connect to help library staffers capture new patrons’ driver’s licenses or ID cards and store their information in the library’s database. Librarians can also search for information on existing patrons by scanning these bar codes.TLC is the only vendor to provide this service to libraries, says Kristen Kokx, product owner for CARL•X. “Our development continues to re-imagine our ILS offerings to provide new staff efficiencies and technologies that support libraries as they align their outreach and services to a more mobile and connected society.” For more information, read the press release.
hoopla Opens to University Libraries
hoopla signed California State University–San Bernardino as the first library in its pilot program for academic libraries. The nearly 20,000 students at San Bernardino and the Palm Desert campus get free, exclusive access to hoopla’s catalog of more than 380,000 movies, music albums, ebooks, videos, audiobooks, and comics when they use their school Coyote ID on the hoopla app or website. The content, which can be used simultaneously by multiple students, is available for instant streaming or temporary download to computers or mobile devices.“Imagine getting access to your university library content from your dorm room or when you are home for the holidays. This university library partnership is a first for hoopla digital. We are thrilled to join with Cal State San Bernardino in defining the future of the university library and to bring our service to these students,” said Jeff Jankowski, hoopla’s owner and founder. Thomson Reuters Reveals Its Nobel Prize Predictions
The Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters shared its 2015 Nobel Prize predictions. To forecast the winners, Thomson Reuters uses scientific research citations from the Web of Science to find the most influential researchers in chemistry, physics, physiology or medicine, and economics. This year’s analysis revealed growth in female authorship of influential research. Between 2002 and 2014, six women were named potential winners, while this year alone, there are four women on the list.For more information and to view the list of predictions, read the press release.
LexisNexis Rolls Out Newest A.S. Pratt Journal
LexisNexis Legal & Professional announced the upcoming availability of the last of its new law journals from the A.S. Pratt Journals collection. Pratt’s Privacy & Cybersecurity Law Report, launching on Lexis Advance in late October, focuses on current local and worldwide aspects of privacy and cybersecurity law, such as active litigation and its case law, preventing and responding to data breaches, and statutory and regulatory developments.The other journals in the collection, Pratt’s Energy Law Report and Pratt’s Government Contracting Law Report, are currently available on Lexis Advance. IEEE Creates Networking and Collaboration Tool Suite
IEEE introduced IEEE Collabratec, a suite of online tools designed to help global technology professionals network, collaborate, create, and find new career opportunities from a centralized hub. These professionals can join the community to search for other professionals by location, technical interests, or careers. According to the press release, they can also access the following features:- Private virtual work spaces where users can assemble global working groups
- The ability for authors to collaborate online, enabling them to publish and research faster
- A suite of tools for managing a personal research library and bibliographies
- Updates on resources, events, and experts that match and advance professional interests or career pursuits
- Access to cutting-edge research and collaborative authoring capabilities integrated within professional networks

Spiceworks Offers Concierge Service
Spiceworks unveiled the IT Concierge Service, a free, personalized resource for helping IT professionals manage their projects of any size and at any phase. Kudos Homepage Gets Upgrade
Kudos redesigned its homepage, navigation bar, and header. The company aimed to make it easy to get started using Kudos by providing an always-visible header; a Menu button in the top-right corner that allows users to access their dashboards and profiles, as well as the Manage Account page; and a Search link in the menu in which users can enter the name or title of the publication they need. Cisco Plans to Acquire Cybersecurity Company
Cisco intends to acquire Portcullis, a private consultancy in the U.K. It offers cybersecurity services to enterprises and government clients, including assessments for identifying vulnerabilities, forensic testing, first-responder training, policy review, and security awareness training. The acquisition will increase Cisco’s ability to offer security, risk, and compliance services; it will also help expand the company’s services outside of North America. Adam Matthew Plans Publication of Publishing, Printing, and Bookselling Archive
Adam Matthew will digitize and publish all of the records from the Stationers’ Co., which provide a history of printing, publishing, and bookselling through rare documents dating from 1554 to the 20th century. According to the press release, these include the following:- Stationers’ Company Registers or Entry Books of Copies, 1554-1842; it maps the origins of copyright and includes historic entries such as Shakespeare’s First Folio
- Membership records, 1555 to the late 20th century, providing biographical information on the printing and publishing community and documents the history of bookbinding
- Court books, 1602 to the 20th century—an essential source for understanding the workings of the company and for dating texts or tracing editions
- The English Stock Records, 1603 to 1961, documenting the activities of the Stationers’ successful publishing arm that employed out-of-work printers
- Miscellaneous ephemera, including material discovered after the London bombings in the Second World War.

Khan Academy Rolls Out New Apps
Khan Academy released a redesigned app for iPhones and its first app for Android phones, which offer more than 30% of its sessions (10,000-plus videos) in subjects such as math, science, economics, and history. Users can bookmark content to the Your List feature to access anytime or download to use offline. iPhone and iPad users can view the app in Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French, Norwegian, and Turkish. Content syncs between mobile devices and the Khan Academy website.For more information, read the blog post.
