Gale Shares TEAMS Award Winners
Gale announced the winners of the 2015 Gale/Library Media Connection TEAMS Award, which it offers every 2 years to schools whose teachers and media specialists collaborate to promote learning and student achievement.The winners are Murray Centennial Public School in Ontario, for “Our Community Aurasma Gallery Walk,” which uses 3D technology; Scott Middle School in Nebraska, for “Make a Difference With Social Action Research,” which teaches about the research process; and Portland High School in Tennessee, for “Get Healthy—A Panther Community Garden,” which promotes healthy eating habits. DeepDyve Grants Access to German Library of Medicine Archive
DeepDyve partnered with the German National Library of Medicine’s Leibniz Information Centre for Life Sciences to give researchers access to millions of full-text articles from the center’s LIVIVO portal. Scientists can pay a monthly subscription fee to view as much content as they need—which includes more than 45 life sciences sources such as library catalogs, databases, and publisher directories—via their browsers, even if they are no longer affiliated with an academic library. They can print up to 20 pages per month and purchase discounted PDFs to download.“For online users, it has become quite normal to rent or stream content from the cloud—whether music or films. With DeepDyve and LIVIVO, scientists in Germany can now gain convenient and affordable access to needed literature,” says William Park, DeepDyve’s CEO. For more information, read the press release.
OpenGov Intelligence Gets Updates
OpenGov introduced the newest version of its OpenGov Intelligence budget visualization solution to leverage nonfinancial data, Route Fifty reports. Officials and department heads can now view personnel costs, grant updates, and capital projects. They can also combine financial data with sources such as crime, utilities consumption, and environmental datasets. Additionally, OpenGov added a Chart of Accounts that helps finance directors simplify data by using aggregated labels.For more information, read the article.
Cengage Learning Acquires Ed Tech Company
Cengage Learning acquired the education technology company Learning Objects, whose learning platform and instructional design services power online programs and courses for higher education institutions. The company will complement Cengage Learning’s existing course solutions and use Cengage’s “momentum toward competency-based learning, adaptive learning and open educational resources,” the press release notes. Cengage Learning will be able to use Learning Objects’ content-agnostic platform with “flexible program-level curriculum development and delivery models and a unified learner experience.”For more information, read the press release.
Google Loses 'Right to Be Forgotten' Appeal in France
France’s data protection regulator rejected Google’s appeal of the order to expand “the right to be forgotten” to all of Google’s websites around the world, according to The Wall Street Journal. Google must allow European residents to request that it remove links in search results for their names for all of its domain names, including google.com, or be sanctioned by the French court. Google’s statement notes that the French regulator should not have the authority to expand the rule to other countries.For more information, read the article.
DocuSign Integrates D&B Data Into Salesforce App
D&B partnered with DocuSign to develop a pre-contract due diligence solution for the Salesforce AppExchange. By 4Q 2015, the DocuSign for Salesforce app will be integrated with D&B data to give businesses access to D&B credit risk insight and compliance tools. Companies can check, flag, and monitor potential risks so they can manage their total risk exposure.For more information, read the press release.
NPG-Palgrave Macmillan Survey Shows Perceptions of OA Publishing
Nature Publishing Group (NPG) and Palgrave Macmillan released the findings from a survey of 22,000 academic researchers. They show a growing confidence in the quality of open access (OA) publications.“In 2014, 40% of scientists who had not published open access in the last three years said ‘I am concerned about perceptions of the quality of OA publications’. But this year, only 27% said they were concerned,” notes BioMed Central’s Kam Arkinstall in a blog post announcing the findings. However, about 5% of respondents are still unaware of OA as a publishing option. For more information, read the blog post.
Coursera Launches Bitcoin Course
Coursera and Princeton University are working together to offer a computer science course on bitcoin, EducationNews reports. Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency Technologies—which consists of lectures, quizzes, community discussion, and other learning tactics—explores what bitcoin is and how it works. Students can purchase the course textbook, but draft chapters of it will be free online.“How does our textbook (and course) differ from other books on Bitcoin? It’s simple: this is unabashedly a computer science text and course. We connect the ideas we discuss to the rest of computer science, and separate fundamental concepts from implementation details,” says Princeton’s Arvind Narayanan, one of the course instructors. “The hype in the Bitcoin community has sometimes gotten ahead of the technology, and we think that for cryptocurrencies to truly realize their potential, entrepreneurs must go back to the basics, rigorously understand the technology and build on it.” For more information, read the article.
Springer Partners With Italian University for Book Series
Springer and the Polytechnic University of Turin introduced the PoliTO Springer Series, a new book series of about 15 books per year. It will cover topics such as mathematics and statistics, chemistry and physical sciences, computer science, and engineering. Although focused on the disciplines at the Polytechnic University, it will accept submissions from other universities around the world, in the form of lecture notes, research monographs, and briefs.For more information, read the press release.
Thomson Reuters Rolls Out Website for Examining Global Innovation
The Intellectual Property (IP) & Science business of Thomson Reuters launched The State of Innovation, a new website for tracking innovation trend data and industry-specific insights on the lifecycle of innovation. It offers the annual Top 100 Global Innovators list and a list of Citation Laureates, as well as information from the “The Future Is Open: 2015 State of Innovation” report.“Innovation is at the heart of the global economy. It is the lifeblood of business, but it’s difficult to measure,” says Basil Moftah, president of Thomson Reuters IP & Science. “By dissecting innovation to its core components—the scientific research that informs initial discovery and the patents that protect and commercialize new ideas—we can begin to identify important trends that influence the future of the global economy.” For more information, read the press release.
Fastcase Acquires Wolters Kluwer's LoislawConnect
Fastcase acquired LoislawConnect (one of its competitors in the legal research market) from Wolters Kluwer Law & Business, the Law Sites blog reports. Wolters Kluwer will sunset Loislaw on Nov. 30 and hand over the product’s brand and domain name, along with its subscribers. However, Loislaw subscribers will retain access to Wolters Kluwer’s library of 125 treatises on topics such as bankruptcy, business, employment, and intellectual property.The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
