Adam Matthew Releases Archive of Colonial American Life

Adam Matthew rolled out the first module of Colonial America, a five-part research collection composed of all 1,450 files from The National Archives’ CO 5 class (covering 1606–1822). It features the correspondence of the Board of Trade and secretaries of state with the North American and Caribbean colonies, among other materials documenting life in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Module I is titled Early Settlement, Expansion and Rivalries. The rest of the collection will be released during the next 5 years.

Reprints Desk Updates the Article Galaxy Widget

Research Solutions, Inc. announced enhancements to Reprints Desk’s Article Galaxy Widget, an STM research tool that provides web browser access to articles from 50-plus sites and databases. New features include the ability to open references on a shareable page that can be bookmarked; export references to RefWorks or in a format compatible with other reference management systems such as EndNote, Zotero, and Mendeley; and open references in Reprints Desk’s Bibliogo.

Google Gears Up for New School Year

Google updated its suite of productivity apps to help students with their school projects, according to CNET. New functions include the ability to more easily see changes users have made to documents in Google Docs and Google Sheets, as well as the addition of voice typing so students can dictate content that translates to text in a document. The See New Changes button shows what edits were made and by whom, and the Explore feature automatically generates graphs and charts from spreadsheet data. The company also updated the Docs app for Android with the ability to use Google to search directly from the app.

EBSCO Chooses Portico for Primary Source Preservation

EBSCO Information Services partnered with Portico to preserve its primary source content, giving researchers uninterrupted access to historical content in EBSCO’s digital archives collections. These archives include the AAS (American Antiquarian Society) Historical Periodicals series, the African American Historical Serials Collection, the ATLA Historical Monographs Collection, and Civil War Primary Source Documents.

EBSCO is using Portico’s D-Collection Preservation Service, which currently preserves more than 120 collections. It is supported by participating publishers.

New Database From SAGE Helps Business Researchers

SAGE Publications launched Business Stats, a collection of more than 4,000 data series on historic, current, and projected demographic and industry data points for business students and researchers working on business plan and market research projects. The data series come from proprietary sources such as Woods & Poole Economics, Inc. and project information through the year 2040. Topics covered include age and race breakdowns, earnings and employment by industry, patent and trademarks, private investment, personal income and households by income bracket, and retail sales and company revenue by industry.

Brill Teams With DataSalon for Consolidated Customer Information

Brill adopted DataSalon’s MasterVision platform and its OrgRef open dataset to show customer data in a single view, thus facilitating business growth and market development. MasterVision provides a complete picture of Brill’s books and journals customers, including subscribers, platform registrants, authors, and marketing data. The information is easy to search and segment, and MasterVision’s reports allow users to visualize the data in different ways.

Brill will use the insights it gleans from MasterVision to help its marketing, sales, and publishing departments run gap analysis and discover new opportunities.

ProQuest Makes More Early European Books Available

ProQuest launched Collection 7, the newest part of its Early European Books database, with 7,450 titles. Materials came from institutions such as the National Library of the Netherlands, the Royal Library in Denmark, and the Wellcome Library in London. ProQuest scanned the works on-site at these libraries and created high-definition color images of every page; it also scanned the bindings and covers.

Early European Books now offers more than 40,000 titles and 14 million pages of images from the early modern period.

iMoneza Introduces New Revenue Stream for Publishers

iMoneza, a secure micropayment gateway for digital media, announced the availability of its cloud-based solution to help publishers develop a new revenue stream (charging a small 10–50 cent fee to read premium content). Publishers can offer basic content for free and price premium content individually to increase their revenue.

“If readers don’t want to become a subscriber, instead of publishers offering a metered pay wall and risking that readers go elsewhere, the reader can purchase specific content through iMoneza’s digital wallet via a simple one-click payment platform,” the press release notes.

There is no upfront cost or monthly fee to use iMoneza; the company takes a small percentage of publishers’ revenue.

ProQuest Website Gains Portuguese Portal

ProQuest launched a Portuguese-language version of its website for its Brazilian customers. As a gateway to ProQuest’s global website, this version features information about products and services, as well as resources such as brochures and case studies. Customer service pages, training videos, and end-user support materials are also available. Additionally, users can access the existing local language blog posts for Brazil.

SirsiDynix Rolls Out MobileCirc App

SirsiDynix announced that MobileCirc is now in general release. This mobile app helps Horizon and Symphony customers bring circulation service outside their libraries by allowing anyone with a smartphone, tablet, or web-enabled device to access circulation functions and basic user management. Staffers inside the library can use the app’s features for doing inventory, weeding, and holds trapping and transiting.
