CCC Adds Publisher Partners to RightFind XML for Mining
Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) signed two new publishers to its RightFind XML for Mining solution: Oxford University Press (OUP) and Nature Publishing Group (NPG). When publishers adopt the service, they receive usage reports that help them make decisions about text and data mining (TDM), which influence their content-development strategy.“By enrolling in CCC’s XML for Mining service, OUP can more efficiently expose TDM researchers to its content,” says Emily Sheahan, CCC’s general manager and executive director. “This helps strengthen OUP’s existing subscription business by enabling its customers to derive more value.” CCC’s agreement with NPG includes the majority of STM journal content from Springer Nature. “We will also continue to offer text and data-mining on nature.com for site license customers, and to license content for PubMed Central’s open access subset,” says Elliot Hermann, NPG’s VP and director of sales operations and strategy. Boopsie Designs Military Language School App
The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC) signed with Boopsie for Libraries for support in transitioning to digital resources. DLIFLC is a school for active and reserve military members, foreign military students, and civilian workers in the federal government and various law enforcement agencies.Boopsie and DLIFLC will develop a mobile app for military libraries to serve the school’s 3,500 students in graduate-level language programs. The app will provide access to content from aggregators and publishers such as EBSCOhost, EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS), and OverDrive. For more information, read the press release.
Cengage Learning Releases MindTap Mobile App
Cengage Learning introduced MindTap Mobile, an iOS and Android app for the MindTap elearning platform to help students stay organized, use short periods of time to study, and interact with instructors. Student feedback was a key component of the app’s development—it helped Cengage choose which MindTap features to include, such as due date reminders, notifications, and flash cards. The app also offers flash card-based practice quizzes, among other new features.MindTap Mobile is compatible with any of MindTap’s 520-plus courses in more than 50 disciplines. hoopla Adds Volumes From Image Comics
hoopla added new titles from Image Comics, Inc. to its app and online service with help from Trajectory, the publisher’s global distribution partner. The new additions include volumes of The Walking Dead, Invincible, Saga, and the Spawn Origins Collection, which can be read using hoopla’s Action View feature (offering full-page and panel-by-panel views).New comics will be added to hoopla each week, joining the service’s catalog of more than 350,000 streaming videos, ebooks, audiobooks, and music albums. Publishing Technology Delivers New Solution for Building Websites
Publishing Technology, PLC rolled out ingentaDrive, its new solution to help any type of publisher quickly go live with fully branded sites that are delivered from the cloud. Its key features include faceted browsing and searching, variable access control, customizable collections, social media sharing, and integration with other organizations such as Altmetric and CrossRef.“ingentaDrive takes the best features from Publishing Technology’s two flagship online products, pub2web and ingentaconnect, and gives publishers a powerful and convenient out-of-the-box tool that empowers them to manage their online content with ease,” says Michael Cairns, Publishing Technology’s CEO. STM's Article-Sharing Principles Get Update
STM released a revised version of its “Voluntary Principles for Article Sharing on Scholarly Collaboration Networks.” Based on feedback from a consultation in early 2015, the principles list a set of core beliefs such as, “Publishers and libraries should be able to measure the amount and type of sharing, using standards such as COUNTER, to better understand the habits of their readers and quantify the value of the services they provide.” STM also provided a commentary paper outlining the changes to the principles, updates from the working group, and future plans. InfoDesk Plans New Version of PipelinePlus
InfoDesk will launch a new drug research platform, PipelinePlus 2.0, which has an enhanced interface and updated search options and visualization capabilities. It will be available for general release in November 2015.Pipeline Plus simplifies drug pipeline searching and provides federated results and related drug news on a single platform. New features in the 2.0 release include upgraded functionality for creating, maintaining, and updating drug pipeline visualization funnel charts, as well as a simplified Boolean search builder. DPLA Expands Service Hub Network
The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) added four new service hubs—representing Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin—to its hub network. According to the press release, “The addition of these Hubs continues our efforts to help build local community and capacity, and further efforts to build an on-ramp to DPLA participation for every cultural heritage institution in the United States and its territories.”Materials from Illinois will include documentation of the state’s coal mining and rural healthcare, as well as World War II photographs. Michigan will share history of Detroit, as well as Civil War diaries, historically significant American cookbooks, and other items. Topics from Pennsylvania include the Civil Rights Movement, early American history, and the Pittsburgh iron and steel industries. Gale Announces Academic Library Survey Results
Gale and Library Journal released the results of a survey on academic libraries, which shows that closer collaboration between librarians and faculty members is necessary for improved communication between the two groups. Nearly all librarians surveyed (98%) want better communication with faculty members; but 45% of faculty members wish for better communication with librarians.“The findings support what academic librarians already know anecdotally: proactively engaging librarians in the work of teaching faculty, including research and curriculum development, is key to a robust working relationship that leads to better outcomes for students,” says Meredith Schwartz, Library Journal’s executive editor. GPO Offers Electronic Code of Federal Regulations in XML Format
The U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) and the National Archives and Records Administration’s Office of the Federal Register (OFR) made all of the titles in the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations (e-CFR) available in XML format to facilitate one-click bulk data download from the GPO’s Federal Digital System (FDsys).OFR gives GPO the regularly updated e-CFR files for conversion to XML, which allows third parties to reuse and repurpose the data for mobile web applications, data mashups, and other tools.
