NLM and NEH Partner for Upcoming Workshop and Other Initiatives
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) re-established their partnership from 2012 to create initiatives for bringing specialists together to share expertise and develop new research agendas in the humanities, medicine, and information sciences. For example, the NLM will host the NEH’s workshop, Images and Texts in Medical History: An Introduction to Methods, Tools, and Data From the Digital Humanities, in April 2016.The organizations plan to use their partnership to encourage high-quality humanities, biomedical, and cultural heritage scholarship; foster interactions among scholars, scientists, librarians, archivists, and others; and deliver resources for the research and education communities. Smithsonian Includes CHORUS in Public Access Plan
According to the Smithsonian’s Plan for Increased Public Access to Results of Federally Funded Research (effective Oct. 1, 2015), all applicable publications and supporting data that comes from federally funded research submitted on or after that date will be available via Smithsonian Research Online (SRO) or CHORUS (Clearinghouse for the Open Research of the United States). For journals that are CHORUS members, SRO and CHORUS will link to the publisher’s public access version of the articles.“Our agreement formalizes a collaboration that will soon begin to yield benefits for the public. By leveraging existing infrastructure with new services and technologies, CHORUS helps minimize the Smithsonian’s administrative compliance efforts and maximizes identification, discovery, access and monitoring of that content,” says Howard Ratner, CHORUS’ executive director. ProQuest Debuts Platform Enhancements
ProQuest rolled out an enhanced platform interface designed to streamline research tasks. The company used deep analysis of researcher behaviors, extensive testing with users and librarians, and other testing to improve the discovery of and access to ProQuest content. Pages have simplified layouts that focus on content and tools regardless of the device being used. Document viewing now offers a better reading experience, with search results that are easier to navigate.ProQuest will continue to make improvements to numerous products throughout the year. LexisNexis Integrates Digital Library With SharePoint Functionality
LexisNexis Legal & Professional announced the integration of its LexisNexis Digital Library with Handshake’s Portal & Search for Microsoft’s SharePoint 2013 and Office 365. This allows firm attorneys and law librarians to review and check out ebook titles via SharePoint, as well as contextualize their digital library subscriptions around practice areas, people, matters, and other sources.“The integration of trusted eBook titles from LexisNexis and our alliance partners into Handshake’s SharePoint-based Portals equips law firm libraries with a new way to circulate digital media, specifically when and where attorneys need it and within the context of their daily workflow—driving efficiency for lawyers and greater value for a firm’s collection budget,” says Susan Slisz, VP of print and digital solutions at LexisNexis. Pearson Renews Commitment to Learning Software Provider
Pearson extended its partnership with Knowledge Factor to continue using Knowledge Factor’s amplifire as the learning software underlying the Dynamic Study Modules in Pearson’s MyLab & Mastering collection. These modules help higher-education teachers continuously assess students’ performance and activity, as well as use data and analytics to customize content in real time.Pearson and Knowledge Factor have collaborated on this project since 2012. Since then, Dynamic Study Modules have been implemented into more than 350 MyLab & Mastering tools, which are accessible from the web and mobile devices. For more information, read the press release.
SAGE Rolls Out Journal Issue on Research-Sharing in Developing Countries
SAGE Publications released a special issue of the Journal of Empirical Research on Human Research Ethics (JERHRE) that features guidelines, protocols, models, and other resources to improve biomedical data-sharing around the world. Titled “Ethics and Sharing Individual-Level Health Research Data From Low and Middle Income Settings,” this issue uses research from the Wellcome Trust on behalf of the Public Health Research Data Forum to outline views from developing countries such as India and Kenya.For more information, read the press release.
IFLA Statement Encourages Advocacy for Patron Privacy
The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) released the “IFLA Statement on Privacy in the Library Environment.” It aims to guide libraries and information services in dealing with threats to privacy, such as mass government surveillance and commercial user data collection. Also discussed are current challenges to the protection of user privacy, relevant international statements about privacy as a right, related IFLA policies, and recommendations to libraries and information services about how to advocate for privacy protection and to protect user privacy in libraries.For more information, read the press release.
ReadCube Signs Its 60th Publisher
ReadCube will index more than 29,000 articles from 30 MIT Press journals as Enhanced PDFs on ReadCube’s platform. Subjects include the arts, economics, science and technology, history, and political science. The articles will provide hyperlinked in-line citations, annotation tools, access to supplemental materials, clickable author names, social sharing, and altmetrics capabilities.Also indexed on ReadCube are publications from Springer, Wiley, and the Royal Society of Chemistry, among others.
