TLC Partners With Children's Book Distributor
The Library Corp.’s (TLC) Carl•X ILS was certified to use the Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) standard with the Children’s Plus, Inc. (CPI) book distributor, giving CARL•X customers the option to order thousands of juvenile and young adult titles.“Key to TLC’s acquisitions strategy, are the strong relationships we forge with our third party partners, and working with CPI to bring additional options for materials ordering and invoicing to the CARL customer base, quickly and efficiently, is no exception,” says Ebony Pacheco-Hoos, CARL’s subject matter expert for acquisitions. UN Sets 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) announced that after 3-plus years of negotiations, the United Nations (UN) has released its final version of “Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.” It features 179 targets for economic, environmental, and social development that all countries can use to improve access to information, achieve universal literacy, eradicate poverty, deal with climate change, protect cultural and natural heritage, and realize other important goals.The agenda provides for a UN Interagency Task Force on Science Technology and Innovation, which will collect information on worldwide IT to spread knowledge, best practices, and lessons learned. The Knight Foundation Backs 22 New Projects
The Knight Foundation’s Knight Prototype Fund granted its latest round of support to 22 projects from institutions such as nonprofits, universities, libraries, media outlets, and the government. They receive $35,000 in funding and become part of a 6-month process that includes a course in human-centered design and time to develop their projects. Then they share their accomplishments at a demo day, and some of the projects may receive additional Knight Foundation funding.Applications for the next round of funding can be submitted on prototypefund.org. EBSCO Health Provides Clinical App for Nurses
EBSCO Health released a Nursing Reference Center Plus app for iPhones, iPads, and Android devices that helps nurses find evidence-based content, answers to clinical questions, and documents for skill-building, even if they’re not connected to the internet. They can also email and take notes on the content.Current Nursing Reference Center Plus subscribers can access the app at no extra cost. For more information, read the press release.
Thomson Reuters Rolls Out Pharmaceutical R&D Factbook
The Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters published the 2015 CMR International Pharmaceutical R&D Factbook, which shows global R&D trends for the biopharmaceutical industry—including the forecast that sales will reach $1.3 trillion by 2018. Additionally, it shows a positive shift in new molecular entities (NMEs) in 2014, with 46 launches; more than 65% of these were specialty drugs for the treatment of cancer, hepatitis C, and HIV. Anticancer development still attracts the highest amount of investments.Pharmaceutical companies around the world contribute to the creation of the factbook. Its goal is to assess productivity and provide insights so the companies can improve the planning and effectiveness of their R&D. For more information, read the press release.
E-rate Program Update
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) pushed back its Sept. 1 deadline for providing schools funding for wireless and internet upgrades as part of the E-rate program, according to FedScoop. The new goal is to get the about $3.9 billion in promised funds distributed to schools across the U.S. by Sept. 24.Although the FCC had not set a deadline for funding in prior years, it changed its process so that the money could be available at the start of the school year in September. Previously, reports FedScoop, “sometimes the process would stretch out for a year or more, which meant schools did not have Internet access and upgrades they needed. Many times, schools would resubmit bids the next year for the same project.” Applicants for funding can now keep track of their requests online. For more information, read the article.
Innovative's SkyRiver Gains British Library Metadata
SkyRiver, a cataloging utility product from Innovative, is making more than 3.5 million records from the British Library’s British National Bibliography available to library customers. This metadata, which includes print and electronic publications from the U.K. and Ireland, brings SkyRiver’s database content to more than 60 million unique records.For more information, read the press release.
ProQuest-Google Scholar Indexing Is Now Complete
The full text of ProQuest’s scholarly content (journals and working papers, etc.) is now indexed in Google Scholar. This helps Google Scholar and ProQuest users more easily find content, and it helps libraries make their subscribed collections more discoverable.ProQuest users searching Google Scholar will be recognized on the ProQuest platform and can access full-text documents in their library’s collections. Users who are not recognized by ProQuest will be able to access a landing page with the document’s abstract or an image of the first page; they can sign in with their library credentials to read the full text. STN Platform Gets More Enhancements
Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) and FIZ Karlsruhe introduced a new version of STN, a web-based search solution for intellectual property (IP) professionals. Updates include access to Markush structure searching (using CAS’s MARPAT database of Markush structures), additional databases and export formats, and other workflow and interface enhancements. Also included are engineering, petroleum, and energy databases as well as chemical substance information and other associated references for patent searches.“Now with 30 databases covering a broad spectrum of science and technology, IP professionals in many disciplines can take advantage of the robust capabilities of the new platform to transform the way they conduct intellectual property searches,” says Rainer Stuike-Prill, VP of marketing and sales at FIZ Karlsruhe. Leadership Directories' QuickConnect Is Now Available on Salesforce's AppExchange
Leadership Directories launched its QuickConnect product on the Salesforce’s AppExchange so customers can integrate their information (bio and contact information, etc.) into Salesforce. QuickConnect helps businesses connect with federal, state, and local government executives who make decisions about procurement, logistics, regulations, staffing, and technology. Users can import up to 5,000 targeted leads into Salesforce with more than 40 fields, such as title, address, phone number, and social media profiles.
