Nature Publishing Group Will Add Phenomics Journal to Its Portfolio
Nature Publishing Group (NPG) and Fudan University in Shanghai agreed to co-publish a new interdisciplinary, open access (OA) journal, npj Molecular Phenomics. It will be open for submissions in October 2015 and cover advances in “the study of the physical and chemical expression of gene-environment interactions, their relationships with the underlying genomes, and the relationship of molecular phenotypes with disease risk and response to therapy,” according to the press release.“Phenomics is a fast growing field of study. We are seeing a rapid increase in the establishment of research laboratories and facilities for phenomics research including in the US, Europe and Asia,” says Annette Thomas, SpringerNature’s chief scientific officer. “Fudan University is one of the pioneers in developing phenomics research programs, and has established one of the largest phenotyping facilities in the world … Their research strengths make them the natural partner for npj Molecular Phenomics.” For more information, read the press release.
Amazon Web Services Announces New Solutions
Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched a solution for mobile app developers, AWS Device Farm, which helps them upload and test their apps on actual devices that run Android and Fire OS. After the tests are complete, developers can access reports showing the problems that occurred. Developers can set up AWS Device Farm accounts for free and pay as they use the service.AWS also introduced the Amazon API Gateway service, which helps customers create, publish, maintain, monitor, and secure APIs (for accessing data, business logic, or other functionalities) from the AWS Management Console. The service is pay-as-you-go and can generate client software development kits (SDKs) for platforms using JavaScript, iOS, and Android, among other systems. ConnectHome Initiative Brings Broadband to Public Housing Residents
The American Library Association (ALA) announced that HUD (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development) and President Barack Obama’s administration launched the ConnectHome initiative to bring high-speed broadband internet access to public housing residents. It begins with a pilot program in 27 cities and one tribal nation and will reach more than 275,000 low-income households.ISPs, nonprofits, and private enterprises are providing the access, as well as technical training, digital literacy programs, and devices. EBSCO Health Gives Wikipedia Access to Its Clinical Reference Solution
EBSCO Health and Wikipedia joined forces to give Wikipedia’s healthcare editors free access to DynaMed Plus so they can use it to generate content, perform research, and verify information for entries that cover medicine, pharmacology, public health, and related information. Up to 300 Wikipedia editors who meet the qualifications set out by this partnership will get free accounts for DynaMed Plus.There are more than 155,000 medical-related articles on Wikipedia, which have nearly 1 million references. Elsevier Promotes Data Sharing With Reciprocal Linking
Elsevier partnered with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to implement two-way linking between ScienceDirect’s articles and publicly accessible datasets from NCI’s cancer Nanotechnology Laboratory (caNanoLab) portal. This reciprocal linking means that research data will be easier to find and will be reused by other researchers. Blackboard Adopts Analytics-Focused Technology for Its Applications
Blackboard acquired X-Ray Analytics, a research-based, predictive analytics technology for the education community. It will be integrated first into Blackboard’s Moodlerooms and Enterprise Moodle, then expand to other Blackboard applications and analytics solutions.The cloud-based X-Ray Analytics offers visualizations of past behaviors and performances in courses, across courses, and at institutional levels. It also predicts future behaviors and outcomes—and identifies potential risk areas—to help instructors tailor their lessons to provide the greatest level of support. British Library Document Supply Service Content Is Now Available via ingentaconnect
The British Library and Publishing Technology, PLC teamed up to make 5,400 new journals and books available on Publishing Technology’s ingentaconnect platform. This opens up a new channel through which the British Library Document Supply Service (BLDSS) can offer its content: BLDSS titles will be more discoverable online, via ingentaconnect as well as library discovery services. The addition of these publications to ingentaconnect increases its catalog by more than 40%.For more information, read the press release.
Springer Begins Co-Publishing Two Fields Institute Journals
Springer and the Fields Institute will co-publish Mathematics-in-Industry Case Studies (MICS) and Fields Mathematics Education Journal (FMEJ), two open access (OA) journals that are now available on SpringerOpen. The Fields Institute will cover both journals’ article-processing charges (APCs).MICS launched in 2008 with the theme of stimulating innovative mathematics, statistics, and related computational methods by modeling and analyzing these topics across other disciplines. FMEJ began in 2014 as a showcase for the range of themes that affect the worldwide mathematics education community. For more information, read the press release.
Udacity Offers New Incentive for Finishing Its Nanodegree Program
Udacity announced that participants in its Nanodegree program now receive half of their tuition back when they graduate, as long as they complete the program within 12 months. BioMed Central Teams With European Institutions to Release Physiotherapy Journal
BioMed Central, the Italian Society of Physiotherapy, and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland introduced the open access (OA) Archives of Physiotherapy journal. These organizations will cover its article-processing charges (APCs) for its first 4 years of publication. Formerly the Italian Journal of Physiotherapy, this publication is international in scope and will feature systematic reviews, meta-analyses, case reports, and articles that will cover topics such as disability, diagnostic, measurement-focused, observational, and qualitative studies.For more information, read the press release.
