SirsiDynix Makes Security a Priority
SirsiDynix announced that its SaaS solution was officially certified for compliance with the ISO 27001 security standard as well as officially accredited by the NIST SP 800-53 standard.ISO 27001 is published by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and is used by governments around the world to show that security is properly implemented throughout an organization. It means that senior management is involved with assessing security risks and works to continuously improve its information security management system. NIST SP 800-53, from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), covers corporate operations, technology, physical security, and incident response plans, among other areas. Thieme Tests New OA Model
Thieme will launch The Surgery Journal, a new pay-what-you-want (PWYW), open access (OA), online-only publication that will provide original research, reviews, and case reports on all surgical specialties. After papers have been accepted, authors will choose the amount of the article processing charge (APC) they will pay.The publisher also plans to work with the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich’s School of Management and department of economics to examine authors’ perceptions of APCs and PWYW as a business model for academic journals and publish the results of their study. Mission Bell Media Announces First Reference Book
Mission Bell Media published its first reference title, African American Leadership: A Concise Reference Guide. It explores interdisciplinary themes that relate to leadership in African-American communities. Topics include the Harlem Renaissance, Motown, gender and leadership, the Black Business Network, the NAACP, civil rights leadership, and negro baseball leagues.The book also features extras such as a chronology, a resource guide, and Leadership Glossary: Essential Terms for the 21st Century (covering more than 950 leadership terms). CCC Debuts Text Mining Solution
Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) launched RightFind XML for Mining, a text mining solution that helps commercial life science researchers create sets of full-text XML-formatted articles from 4,000-plus peer-reviewed STM journals and import them into third-party text-mining software.Linguamatics I2E text mining software is the first third-party mining platform integrated with RightFind XML for Mining. Digital Publishers Get Free Access to Reuters News
Reuters will provide a portion of its multimedia news content to digital publishers for free via Reuters Media Express. Digital publishers can use a limited set of ready-to-publish news items each month that includes text, pictures, videos, and multimedia packages. The sets are produced by more than 2,500 Reuters journalists from around the world.The free content covers topics such as world news, finance, business, sports, health, and entertainment politics. Duke University Implements Altmetric to Track Scholarly Mentions
Duke University chose Altmetric for Institutions to monitor the online dissemination of and engagement with the research of its faculty members and administrators. Using the platform, the Duke community can browse, filter, and report on online mentions of its research in public policy documents, mainstream and social media, online reference managers, Wikipedia, and other forums.“We wanted to give our faculty a better understanding of who was saying what about their research, beyond just traditional citations, and hope that they will begin to use this data to support and inform more engagement with the wide variety of users and uses of their research, and to demonstrate the broader impacts of their work,” says Kevin Smith, director of Duke’s Office of Copyright and Scholarly Communication. U.S. Copyright Office Report Addresses Orphan Works and Mass Digitization
The U.S. Copyright Office documented the problems that occur when using orphan works and engaging in mass digitization projects. “Orphan Works and Mass Digitization: A Report of the Register of Copyrights” provides a series of legislative recommendations that are designed to help users as well as conform to the rights of copyright owners.The coverage of orphan works draws on the Shawn Bentley Orphan Works Act of 2008 and includes updates and changes. The report recommends a more incremental approach to mass digitization that would allow the U.S. to gain experience with the extended collective licensing framework used in other countries. Zepheira Launches Libhub Initiative Early Adopter Program
Zepheira introduced the Libhub Initiative Early Adopter Program to help academic libraries showcase their resources on the web. The program will build awareness of linked data by offering education, training, and exploration.Facets of the program include attendance at Zepheira’s Practical Practitioner Linked Data & BIBFRAME Essentials online course; the linked data readiness assessment, featuring analysis of up to 100,000 MARC records, among other services; a community space for sharing information and experiences; and shared access to BIBFRAME tools as they’re developed. Ratings and Reviews Come to Boopsie Mobile App
Boopsie for Libraries will add rating and reviewing capabilities to its mobile platform. Mobile app users will be able to rate library catalog titles using a 1- to 5-star system and review any title (including anonymously or using an alias). They can also view other users’ ratings and reviews.“Users are more likely to take advantage of library services if they mimic those that they voluntarily choose to use in their free time. Case in point: 64% of library users say that they’re likely to use recommendation functionality,” says Tony Medrano, Boopsie’s CEO. “By offering Ratings and Reviews, we’re making the library’s services recognizable to these digital users and more accessible to the diverse communities that each library serves.” For more information, read the press release.
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Completes Its Acquisition of Scholastic’s Ed Tech Business
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) completed its $575 million acquisition of Scholastic’s Educational Technology and Services business. Now HMH can add market-leading intervention curriculum and services to its pre-K–12 portfolio and expand into other areas such as educational technology, early learning, and education services. The business’ approximately 800 employees became part of HMH along with its president, Margery Mayer, who is now EVP of HMH Intervention Solutions. For more information, read the press release.
