Library of Congress Updates Website With New Interface and Web Archive Content

According to The Signal, the Library of Congress’ (LC) digital preservation blog, the LC launched new web archive content on as it integrates its archives into the rest of the website. This is the first big content release since June 2013, and it comes with a simplified interface and similarities to web archives at other institutions. There are now more than 5,800 sites and 21 named collections available in this interface, including the United States Congressional Web Archive.

GCIG Report Aims to Coordinate International Internet Policy

The Global Commission on Internet Governance (GCIG) released a new report, “Solving the International Internet Policy Coordination Problem.” Author Nick Ashton-Hart suggests that a Geneva-based “coordination committee” would make global internet policy discussions less disjointed. He explains that because cybersecurity, human rights, law enforcement, and economic discussions are taking place in various forums around the world, stakeholders and government have difficulty resolving internet policy issues in a holistic way.

“[C]ontinuing to address Internet-related public policy in subject-area silos, independently developing and implementing policy with ad hoc efforts to coordinate related activities, would be a serious mistake,” he writes.

Kudos Signs Up New Institutional and Publisher Partners

Kudos entered into new institutional partnerships with ETH Zürich, Hong Kong Baptist University, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the University of Stockholm. Kudos will use this partnership program to shape its service for helping universities and research institutes understand how Kudos’ tools explain and share researchers’ work as well as the effects of these actions.

The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Inc. and The Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy are Kudos’ new publisher partners.

NPG Announces New Journals for 2016

Nature Publishing Group (NPG) will launch three new journals in January 2016: Nature Energy, Nature Microbiology, and Nature Reviews Materials.

Nature Energy, now accepting submissions, will cover energy generation, storage, and management, as well as other related topics across the natural and social sciences.

Nature Microbiology, also accepting submissions, will be a platform for researchers and policymakers to learn about advances in microorganisms, including their evolution, physiology, cell biology, interactions with each other, and societal significance.

Nature Reviews Materials, the first Nature Reviews title in the physical sciences, will build on the success of Nature Materials.

D&B Integrates Data Within Oracle Data Cloud Platform

In order to enter the B2B digital marketing space, D&B made more than 270 segments of commercial data available within the Oracle Data Cloud and through the BlueKai marketplace. The data is curated from more than 30,000 international sources and is compiled into 700-plus targetable attributes to form a comprehensive view of audiences so B2B digital marketers and advertisers can identify and reach customers and prospects online. They can also use it to find trends and data patterns.

“Data is central to nearly all business decisions companies make today, including how and with whom companies grow profitable relationships,” says Michael Bird, general manager of D&B’s NetProspex. “By making our data available to marketers when, where, and how they use it, Dun & Bradstreet is helping businesses better understand and score existing and potential targets to effectively engage the right people with the right content, priming them for optimal and long-lasting business relationships.”

Benetech Celebrates Wiley’s Alt Text Initiative

After consultation with Benetech’s DIAGRAM (Digital Image and Graphic Resources for Accessible Materials) Center and other industry standards organizations, Wiley developed alternative (alt) text guidelines (descriptions that provide contextual meanings to images and illustrations) for inclusion in most of its frontlist books, making content accessible to all readers. The publisher is one of the first to use alt text for such a broad scope of its titles.

SciELO Partners With ReadCube

SciELO integrated ReadCube Connect’s interactive PDF viewer into 285-plus scientific journals and more than 280,000 articles in the SciELO Brazil collection. ReadCube enhances the PDFs with interactivity and related content, such as annotation tools, hyperlinked in-line citations, and clickable author names.

“SciELO strives toward visibility and accessibility of scientific content and impact,” says Abel Packer, SciELO’s director. “Our partnership with ReadCube is a natural extension of this mission, offering innovative features to our readers to improve their reading, organization, and interaction with research. We hope to extend this partnership to all SciELO collections in the near future.”

OverDrive Adds Web Listening Option to E-Audiobooks

OverDrive rolled out OverDrive Listen, its new listening option for e-audiobooks. It is similar to OverDrive Read, which is used for ebooks, in that it offers an easy-to-use option to browse, borrow, and listen to titles from within a web browser. No downloads or software are required.

The company automatically added the listening option to eligible MP3 e-audiobooks in users’ digital collections.

Springer Collaborates on IMISCOE Journal and Book Series

Springer and the IMISCOE (International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion in Europe) research network partnered to publish Comparative Migration Studies, an international, peer-reviewed open access (OA) journal, and the book series IMISCOE Research Series.

Comparative Migration Studies focuses on comparative research—between countries, groups, and historical periods, etc.—in migration, integration, and ethnic studies. Funding from IMISCOE allows it to remain OA as part of SpringerOpen and SpringerLink.

The IMISCOE Research Series is the organization’s official book series, with mostly OA titles available via SpringerOpen and SpringerLink. It covers empirical and theoretical research on aspects of international migration.

Microsoft OneNote Gains New Partners

Microsoft updated OneNote’s partner ecosystem with cloudHQ, Equil, and WordPress.

cloudHQ provides a cloud app integration solution, such as for an automatic sync of OneNote notebooks with Dropbox or Salesforce. Users can view and edit information in real time.

Equil uses its Smartpen 2 and Smartmarker solutions to connect the physical surfaces of notepads/whiteboards to OneNote so all of users’ notes are together no matter how they were created.

With the new OneNote plug-in for WordPress, users can turn their notes into blog posts.
