hoopla Begins Lending Ebooks and E-Comics
hoopla is now lending ebooks and e-comics. According to Ink, Bits, & Pixels, libraries using hoopla were informed of the addition of ebooks, although official details are not yet available. There are currently more than 5,000 ebooks available and nearly 600 e-comics.For more information, read the blog post.
Wolters Kluwer Health and NextGen Healthcare Integrate Solutions
NextGen Healthcare will integrate Wolters Kluwer Health’s ProVation Clinic Note into its NextGen Now platform. ProVation Clinic Note has more than 8,000 evidence-based and pre-coded templates and accompanying metadata that enable content changes based on patients’ age, gender, and reason for visit, as well as clinical venue and physician specialty. With ProVation Clinic Note added to NextGen now, clinicians can access “smart documentation” alongside patients’ electronic records, as well as clinical decision support (CDS) rules.“The practice of medicine is constantly evolving, and clinicians are in search of better ways to leverage healthcare IT to remain current with evidence-based practices and with current regulatory and quality processes,” says Sarah Corley, chief medical officer for NextGen Healthcare. “Wolters Kluwer shares our commitment to providing the industry with the tools needed to improve outcomes through customized, evidence-based care. dtSearch Engine Aids Law Firms With E-Discovery
dtSearch integrated its dtSearch Engine into CloudNine’s SaaS-hosted eDiscovery platform for law firms. CloudNine customers can use dtSearch’s advanced text-retrieval search engine to review large volumes of electronically stored information (ESI) quickly.“With information volume in most organizations doubling about every two years, our clients have more data than ever to cull quickly for litigation review,” says Doug Austin, VP of professional services at CloudNine. “Our clients are able to do so through the advanced searching and culling capabilities within our litigation review platform and dtSearch is a key component of that advanced searching and culling.” For more information, read the press release.
Google Adds Tweets to Mobile Searches
Mobile device users will now see tweets in their Google search results. The Google app for Android and iOS devices as well as any mobile browser show real-time content from Twitter in results, allowing organizations and others with Twitter accounts to reach a global audience in a new way.Support for additional languages and desktop functionality are coming soon. ProQuest Will Digitize House of Lords Documents From 1800s
ProQuest and the National Library of Scotland will create the first digitized collection of 19th-century House of Lords Parliamentary Papers. Launching in late 2015, it will help researchers gain insight into British history, British government, political science, and other topics.The House of Lords Parliamentary Papers are the working documents of the British government, touching on social, political, economic, and foreign policy. The collection will include many bills that originated in and were rejected by the House of Lords. It will be cross-searchable with ProQuest’s House of Commons Parliamentary Papers. Brill Announces Donation to Indian University
As part of its Adopt a Library Program, Brill donated more than 500 of its frontlist titles to Loyola-ICAM College of Engineering and Technology (LICET) in India with help from SPi Global (Brill’s content processing and enrichment partner). The books cover fields such as biology, the humanities, and the social sciences.“This is one way in which we can give something back to the local community. We help strengthen the educational system through the provision of resources and training, together with our trusted local partner on the ground SPi Global,” says Liesbeth Kanis, Brill’s business development manager, Asia, and head of its Developing Countries Program. The British Library Plans to Digitize Historic Sounds Collection
The Heritage Lottery Fund endorsed the British Library with earmarked funding to help the library digitize its archive of 500,000 sound recordings and other collections from the U.K. and provide them online. The project, which is planned from 2017 to 2022, will include oral histories, previously unheard musical performances and plays, wildlife sounds (e.g., underwater recordings of killer whales), and recordings from the Canterbury Cathedral (e.g., services and choral and opera performances).For more information, read the press release.
Amazon Provides Learning Tools to Students
Amazon Web Services (AWS) introduced a program designed to deliver real-world cloud technology to graduate-level classrooms around the world. AWS Educate helps educators find cloud-related course content, incorporate cloud technology into their curriculums, and give students hands-on experience with the technology. It is free for educational institutions, educators, and students following approval of their application.Additionally, Amazon company TenMarks announced a free math program to prevent students from experiencing learning loss during the summer. Students (and their parents) in the U.S. can register for the 2015 summer program to participate in a personalized course based on a diagnostic assessment. It is available as an app for tablets running iOS, Android, or Fire OS and covers first-grade math through geometry and Algebra 2. For more information, read the press releases.
Jisc Leads Launch of Global Enlighten Your Research Program
Jisc’s Janet network and 11 other national research and education networks (NRENs) from the Americas, the Asia-Pacific region, and Europe launched the second Enlighten Your Research (EYR) Global program, which provides selected proposals with improved networking, data transfers, and/or engineering during research collaborations. The call for proposals is now open.“Global research in many disciplines is increasingly reliant on access to large data-sets and the capabilities of high-capacity networks such as Janet to move these between facilities for processing and analysis,” says David Salmon, Jisc’s research support unit manager. “We hope that EYR will encourage research groups to collaborate with their UK partners, and to submit proposals for projects that will benefit from access to the Janet network and support from Jisc and the other NRENs to help meet the needs of their research.” For more information, read the press release.
Credo Aids Students With Science Homework Help
Credo added science resources to its Homework Help solution for reading, writing, and math. State-certified teachers of multiple scientific disciplines are available to guide students via a real-time virtual classroom, with an online whiteboard and chat window for one-on-one instruction.“The addition of science to Homework Help means that school and public libraries now have that much more to offer their students,” says John Hutchinson, Credo’s VP of product marketing. “Science is one of the four key areas in any school’s curriculum, but it is a subject in which many parents don’t feel comfortable being able to help when their children have questions.” For more information, read the press release.
