Springer Hosts Researchers' Stories on New Website

Springer Storytellers is a project that allows Springer authors to tell personal stories about being researchers on its website, beforetheabstract.com, which is open to the public. Springer and the Story Collider will host events for researchers where they can tell their stories to live audiences during 10-minute talks that will be recorded as podcasts for the website. Along with the podcasts and written submissions, the site will have contributions from Springer staffers and others on how to craft a narrative and storytelling’s place in scientific communications, etc.

Springer’s goal is to help researchers communicate more effectively and to a wider audience about their work.

Elsevier Supports Researchers With Online Training Campus; Updates Article-Sharing Policies

Elsevier launched Elsevier Publishing Campus, a free online platform that offers training resources to academic researchers. It features lectures, interactive training, and professional advice on topics such as gender in research, open science, how to write articles and grant applications, and peer review and ethics.

The campus is composed of a series of themed “colleges”: College of Skills Training, College of Big Ideas, College of Networking, College of Research Solutions, College of Career Planning, and College of Recommended Organizations.

In other news, Elsevier updated its sharing and hosting policies for articles to make it easier for researchers to share “confidently and easily” on platforms while getting appropriate credit. The policies also aim to ensure that readers can access the best available version of content that is authoritative and complete.

Merged Company to Be Called Springer Nature

The European Union, the U.S. Department of Justice, and other key competition authorities cleared Springer’s merger with the majority of Macmillan Science and Education. The new company, Springer Nature, emphasizes the Springer and Nature brands to showcase its “rich science publishing heritage,” says Derk Haank, Springer Nature’s CEO. He plans to combine the skills and talents of each organization and take “a unified one-company approach [that] will enable us to have a global view.”

The company’s global brands include language learning, its schools and higher education group, and its professional group (supporting professional learning in medicine, engineering, and transport, etc.).

Thomson Reuters Study Reveals French IP Licensing Practices

LES (Licensing Executives Society) France and the Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters released a report on the state of intellectual property (IP) licensing practices in France.

Key findings include:

  • Licensing revenues will remain stable or grow in 2015 according to 68% of respondents.
  • Across all industries of those surveyed, 91% of respondents cited forging partnerships as a principal reason for conducting licensing as well as supporting research and development (89%), and increasing revenue for organizations (79%).
  • 74% of respondents believe the proposed Unified Patent Court is favorable to patent holders.
  • Overall, 80% of all respondents indicated that the activity of Non-Practicing Entities (NPE) had not affected their organizations.
  • There has been double digit growth (16%) in high-tech ICT [information and communication technologies] patent filings in industries such as pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetics in the last 10 years.

ProQuest Is Set to Acquire Coutts Information Services

ProQuest will acquire Coutts Information Services Ltd. from Ingram Content Group. Their agreement includes the MyiLibrary and OASIS (Online Acquisitions and Selection Information System) platforms so that ProQuest can deliver an end-to-end workflow across print and electronic resources. Ingram will continue with print fulfillment in North America and support ProQuest with its print inventory, on-demand printing capabilities, and delivery network. Coutts employees will be invited to join ProQuest’s team under the leadership of Kevin Sayar, SVP and general manager of books at ProQuest.

ProQuest is the perfect home for the ideas, tools and talent of Coutts to continue growing and innovating to better serve this market,” says John Ingram, chairman and CEO of Ingram Content Group.

SAGE Video Platform Debuts

SAGE Publications launched SAGE Video, a series of streaming video collections for higher education, especially undergraduate teaching and learning and higher-level academic study. They are composed of mostly original content from SAGE.

The inaugural collections are Education, Communication and Media Studies, and Counseling and Psychotherapy. There are nearly 1,600 videos and 400 hours of content, including case studies, tutorials, interviews, documentaries, and footage of real-life practitioners.

“The video collections were designed after conducting robust research about changing student needs, instructor preferences, and library support of the research-and-learning ecosystem,” says Stephen Barr, president of SAGE International. “We are confident that these new video resources will enrich the research and learning experience in a unique way by intimately connecting learners to experts in social science fields, truly bringing teaching, learning, and research to life.”

PCG Will Promote Japanese Medical Database

Publishers Communication Group (PCG), a division of Publishing Technology, PLC, signed a sales representation deal with Japanese medical publisher Meteo to facilitate the expansion of Meteo’s Medical*Online-E information service into North and South America. PCG will execute sales and marketing programs to sell subscriptions to academic and medical institutions in these regions.

Medical*Online-E hosts about 800 medical journals and more than 1.3 million articles that it delivers to English-speaking users around the world. It covers general medicine, clinical surgery, dentistry, medical technology, nursing, nutrition, pharmaceutical sciences, public health, and other medical fields.

Cisco Integrates Solutions for Threat Protection

Cisco integrated its Cisco Application-Centric Infrastructure (ACI) data center solution with its FirePOWER Next Generation Intrusion Prevention System (NGIPS) to provide automated threat protection for combating emerging data center security threats. Beginning in June 2015, customers can build infrastructure with fine-grained control (including application-level security), visibility, and centralized automation. The integration also lowers customers’ total cost of ownership.

Food and Nutrition Journal Now Published by SAGE

SAGE Publications will take over publication of the Food and Nutrition Bulletin, a peer-reviewed journal that was previously the official publication of the International Nutrition Foundation. Researchers, academics, nutrition policymakers, and planners in 125-plus nations use it to stay up-to-date on current research and policy information related to nutrition in developing countries. Editor-in-chief Irwin Rosenberg hopes to expand the journal’s coverage of nutrition science, development, and humanitarian policy.

Articles come from organizations such as the United Nations Standing Committee on Nutrition, the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) of the United Nations, WHO (World Health Organization), UNICEF, and the World Bank Group.

Metalogix Rolls Out Office 365 Management Platform

Metalogix, which provides collaboration content management software for enterprise content management systems, introduced Service Manager for Office 365, a comprehensive platform for helping administrators provision users and content across the entire Office 365 suite. This reduces infrastructure complexity and cuts IT costs.

Service Manager for Office 365 can gather cross-application analytics, report on Active Directory user profiles, ensure proper permissions across environments, execute backups, and secure the entire Office 365 suite.
