Cisco and Microsoft Work on Cloud Computing

Cisco extended its relationship with Microsoft for a new technology platform designed to accelerate service delivery and streamline entry into the Intercloud (a globally connected network of clouds) for cloud providers. Cisco Cloud Architecture for the Microsoft Cloud Platform is an integrated solution that helps these providers rapidly deliver cloud services with simplified operations and reduced costs.

Fourteen cloud providers agreed to join Cisco’s existing Intercloud partner ecosystem, which is designed for high-value application workloads, real-time analytics, scalability, and local law compliance.

APA Introduces Teaching-Focused Journal

The American Psychological Association (APA) will release a new journal, Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Psychology, in spring 2015. It covers evidence-based teaching tips and reviews of contemporary teaching theories for high school, community college, college, and university instructors and students.

Four types of articles are represented in the journal: research articles (featuring evidence-based conclusions), teacher-ready research reviews (discussions of old and new research findings), teacher-ready theory reviews (which focus on old and new theories with applications for teaching and learning improvement), and cross-fertilization updates (articles that foster connections across subdisciplines in psychology and interdisciplinary fields).

Kudos Seeks Last Round of Institutional Partners

Kudos announced a final call for participation in its free pilot program. As part of the program, staffers working in research impact, support, policy, development, and planning can access reports on the use of Kudos by researchers in their institutions. Registering for Kudos helps researchers explain and share their work with a wider audience.

Additionally, new publishers and institutions have signed up for its services, including the IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology) and Equinox Publishing Ltd. By agreeing to work with Kudos, these organizations gain insight into how and where researchers talk about their work and the effects those conversations may have.

collectionHQ Adds Scheduler for Collection Management Tasks

collectionHQ launched the Scheduling Module for its evidence-based toolset. Library staffers can use it to plan, coordinate, and monitor all of their collection management and development tasks using a calendar of tasks for each of the tools within collectionHQ. The tasks are color-coded to match their collection management categories (Select, Manage, Promote, or Evaluate).

“We went to great lengths in interviewing many of our current customers to understand how they schedule and plan collectionHQ activities in their existing workflows, and from that have created a flexible and easy to manage process,” says Scott Crawford, VP and general manager at collectionHQ.

NISO Studies Patron Privacy

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded NISO (National Information Standards Organization) a grant to develop the Consensus Framework to Support Patron Privacy in Digital Library and Information Systems. The grant will support a series of community discussions to encourage libraries, publishers, and information systems providers to build better privacy protection into their operations.

NISO will create the framework document for addressing patron privacy in the library, and it will become a NISO Recommended Practice if approved. The project proceeds in three phases: pre-meeting discussions, the drafting of the framework document to detail privacy principles and recommendations, and circulation of the document for public comments and finalization.

TLC Displays Reading Levels in Its ILS Products

The Library Corp. (TLC) added Reading Level Integration to its Library•Solution and Library•Solution for Schools, which gathers data from vendors and associates titles by ISBN for display in various Library•Solution modules.

This enhancement allows school and public libraries to automatically include the most current reading level data in their catalogs. Users can search by individual reading level or by a specified range.

Chinese-Language Journals Join EBSCO Offerings

EBSCO Information Services introduced Chinese Insight, a multidisciplinary database of full-text, predominantly Chinese-language journals for academic institutions. It is produced by Taiwan’s Airiti Press, and content is indexed in Chinese and English.

The database includes the following:

  • More than 3,000 full-text academic journals
  • Nearly 50,000 Chinese-language dissertations from over 50 universities dating back to 2010
  • Nearly 2,000 eBooks
  • More than 500 titles indexed in Traditional Chinese
  • More than 2,600 titles indexed in Simplified Chinese
  • Over 4,000 art images from dozens of artists

Youredi Brings Its Ecommerce Data Integration Solution to the U.S.

Ecommerce data integration solutions provider Youredi launched its integration Platform as a Service (iPaaS) in the U.S. and established a North American subsidiary. The company aims to streamline the flow of information throughout global ecommerce networks using its platform for integrating data across applications, processes, and systems.

“Today, traditional vendors are struggling with the lack of integration between multiple old platforms and the business risk of migration. By providing an iPaaS solution built upon best practices in the cloud, Youredi is solving these critical challenges at significantly less cost than traditional methods, and at the same time, providing the highest levels of transparency, speed, scalability and service,” says Dean Baxter, Youredi’s general manager.

Windows 10 Gets Summer Release

Microsoft will debut Windows 10 in summer 2015. New features include Windows Hello (featuring biometric authentication access), Cortana availability in Mandarin, and versions of Windows for Internet of Things devices (such as ATMs and ultrasound machines). According to The Atlantic, Microsoft will also introduce a new browser that will not be associated with Internet Explorer.

Microsoft plans to offer a free upgrade to the new version for many customers using Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1. Windows 10 will be available in 190 countries and 111 languages.

DPLA Moves Forward With Public Library Partnership Project

The Minnesota Digital Library received a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation—as one of the Digital Public Library of America’s (DPLA) four service hubs to get an award—to work on the Public Library Partnership Project (PLPP). The PLPP is tasked with developing a curriculum for teaching basic digitization concepts and skills that will help public library staffers participate in their local digital libraries and the DPLA to create online exhibitions featuring digitized materials.

During the PLPP’s first phase, the Minnesota Digital Library offered four digital skills training sessions. During the second phase, the participating organizations will propose projects and select materials from their collections for digitization and metadata preparation by the DPLA.
