Thieme's Delhi Division Makes Strides in Neurology Publishing

Thieme Publishers Delhi took over the publication of the peer-reviewed, open access (OA) Indian Journal of Neurosurgery from Wolters Kluwer Health’s Medknow division. As the official journal of the Neurological Surgeon Society of India, it is published three times per year online, with print versions available to society members.

Additionally, Thieme Publishers Delhi was named the official publisher for the Neurological Society of India to publish one title per year. In 2015, Thieme will release Volume 29 of Progress in Clinical Neurosciences. This society represents neurosurgeons, neurologists, and neuro-allied specialists in India.

Innovative Will Support the Libhub Initiative

Innovative agreed to sponsor the Libhub Initiative, which encourages industrywide focus on library resources’ web visibility. With this sponsorship, Innovative will continue to promote the adoption of linked data practices and will develop functionality that will allow libraries to benefit from linked data technologies.

“Innovative’s support of the Libhub Initiative demonstrates that we see linked data as enormously valuable to libraries that want to increase their impact on the Web and be recognized for what they do,” says Leif Pedersen, SVP of product management, R&D, and marketing at Innovative.

University of California Organizations Partner for Publishing Workflow Management System

The University of California Press (UC Press) and the CDL (California Digital Library) received a $750,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to create a web-based, open-source content and workflow management system for publishing open access (OA) humanities and social sciences monographs. The system will be available for use by academic publishers (e.g., university presses and library publishers) to manage the process from initial authoring and manuscript submission to final publication on the open web.

UC Press will use the system to support Luminos, its OA program, and CDL will use it to expand its current publishing services. The Mellon Foundation’s grant gives the organizations 2 years to complete the system.

Reprints Desk Presents at ILLiad Conference

Reprints Desk will demonstrate research retrieval and copyright royalty processing workflows at the 2015 ILLiad International Conference on March 18. Senior sales engineer Chris Atwood will present “Streamlining Content Acquisition and CONTU Compliance via ILLiad,” in which he will explore best practices for full-text article acquisition and clearing copyright to comply with CONTU (Commission on New Technological Uses of Copyrighted Works) guidelines.

The presentation will also discuss how Reprints Desk’s Article Galaxy document delivery platform can help save time, lower costs, and improve document quality during the acquisition of articles, as well as aid in copyright royalty clearance when CONTU’s “rule of five” is exceeded.

ProQuest's Genealogical Resource Gets Upgrade

ProQuest released a new version of its HeritageQuest Online collection of genealogical and historical information. Ancestry.com powers a new interface for enhanced searching, and source improvements include the addition of complete every-name indexes and interactive maps to the U.S. federal census data (1790–1940).

The new version also features upgrades to image viewing: Full-text searching now shows image thumbnails, a new Image Viewer offers capabilities without the use of a plug-in, and image resolution was significantly improved.

Springer Opens Up Conference Proceedings Data for Downloading

Springer Science+Business Media started a pilot project on linked open data by making available selected metadata from conference publications that focus on computer science. Semantically searchable data on about 8,000 proceedings volumes are now downloadable for free. Along with the University of Mannheim’s Data and Web Science Group and Net Wise, Springer is working to expand its list of cooperation partners and conference fields with open data, among other tasks.

The project will help a variety of stakeholders, including conference organizers, national and institutional research agencies that provide project funding, and indexing services.

Cisco Extends IT-Focused Academic Program in Mexico

Cisco renewed its partnership with the University of Guadalajara under the Cisco Networking Academy program and agreed to expand the program in the university’s schools. Nine self-sustaining academies will be added to the existing four in 10 university centers and three technical high schools.

Cisco also agreed to donate laboratory equipment for 13 academies to support hands-on learning. More than 3,000 students will get technical training in preparation for information-driven and IT jobs.

OverDrive Provides Children's Ebooks to Libraries and Schools

OverDrive became the first digital content provider to release narrated and fixed-layout ebooks for libraries and schools in the U.S. Characters featured in these ebooks include SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Many of the 200-plus titles are educational, especially with STEM subject matter.

D&B Puts Forth New Brand Strategy

D&B announced a new brand purpose (“Dun & Bradstreet grows the most valuable relationships in business by uncovering truth and meaning from data.”), tagline (“Growing relationships through data”), and logo, as well as values (“data-inspired,” “relentlessly curious,” and “inherently generous”). CEO Bob Carrigan and the executive leadership team will implement the brand modernization across the company’s products and solutions, content delivery, go-to-market strategy, internal employee programs, and all external positioning.

EBSCO Offers Content From the ATLA Historical Monographs Collection

EBSCO Information Services and the American Theological Library Association (ATLA) introduced 11 thematic series of the ATLA Historical Monographs Collection for religion and theology scholars. Documents come from the 13th century through 1922 and cover topics related to political science, sociology, spirituality, philosophy, and other areas. The typography, graphics, and drawings are preserved from their original presentations.
