Thomson Reuters Provides Tax Research Program to Academics
Thomson Reuters will expand its Checkpoint Learning Tax Research Certificate Program to the academic market, allowing students to develop foundational federal and state tax research knowledge as an enhancement to the traditional curriculum for tax practitioners.The program is delivered via the Bisk CPEasy platform, which is now part of Thomson Reuters. Gale Increases Its Primary Sources Content
Gale, part of Cengage Learning, announced that several Gale Digital Collections for academic and special libraries are now available on the Gale Artemis: Primary Sources platform, including the next three installments of Associated Press Collections Online and Brazilian and Portuguese History and Culture: The Oliveira Lima Library. Researchers can cross-search with other digital archives and access graphing and search visualization tools.Several historical newspaper and periodical collections are now available on Gale Artemis: Primary Sources, bringing its total content to more than 125 million pages. ALA Educates Libraries About the E-rate Program
The American Library Association (ALA) launched the Got E-rate? initiative, which encourages library leaders to apply for internet discounts as part of the E-rate program. In collaboration with the Public Library Association (PLA), state library agencies, and others, ALA will provide a series of E-rate resources such as practical tools and technical support for libraries looking to apply for E-rate funding.With the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) addition of $1.5 billion in annual funding to the program and its other updates, libraries have new opportunities to get the broadband speeds necessary to provide valuable services to their communities. “ALA invested significant resources over the past 18 months to ensure the FCC’s reform efforts would benefit libraries,” says Courtney Young, ALA’s president. “ALA is redoubling its efforts to ensure libraries are fully prepared to take advantage of the ‘new’ E-rate program. … In the next five years, ALA aims to double the amount of E-rate funding going to libraries.” Source: American Library Association
Maney Publishing Offers Articles via ReadCube
The ReadCube Discover service will index more than 100,000 articles from Maney Publishing, making them discoverable via ReadCube’s web, desktop, and mobile reading portals; search engines; and recommendation feeds. ReadCube’s enhanced reading interface will display the articles with features such as hyperlinked in-line citations, annotations, clickable author names, social sharing, direct access to supplemental content, and altmetrics.“By working with ReadCube, we can continue to support scholarly research and discovery everywhere through technology that aids our readers in their search for scholarly literature, provides them with an enhanced user experience once they find what they are looking for, and simultaneously promotes research and innovation in publishing globally,” says Helen Duce, Maney Publishing’s head of epublishing. Baker & Taylor Unveils New Axis 360 App
Baker & Taylor’s new app for Axis 360 is compatible with both Apple and Android devices. It allows users to discover, download, and access ebooks and e-audiobooks with increased functionality and ease of use. They can browse their library or school’s entire digital collection or search for a specific title, as well as view recommendations.“The new Axis 360 app makes the logistics of discovering and downloading digital content easy,” says George Coe, Baker & Taylor’s president and CEO. “The streamlined app gets readers directly to the ebook or audiobook they’re excited to explore. Adam Matthew Will Digitize Shakespearean Prompt Books
Adam Matthew made an agreement with the Folger Shakespeare Library to digitize its entire collection of prompt books (stage managers’ annotated copies, rehearsal copies, and souvenir editions of Shakespeare’s plays) from 1608 to the late 20th century.The collection is set to be published electronically in fall 2016. It will also include 12 Smock Alley Theatre prompt books from 17th-century Dublin, costume and set designs, portraits, actors’ letters, and playbills. Source: Adam Matthew
ProQuest Extends LC Partnership; Reveals Details About New Ebook Platform
ProQuest became a partner in the Library of Congress’ (LC) Electronic Cataloging in Publication (ECIP) and BIBCO programs, allowing the company to assist in preparing prepublication metadata for digital products and monographs that conform to the LC’s standards. ProQuest also works with the LC to offer help in its U.S. ISSN Center, and it is the library’s official off-site repository for its collection of American dissertations.Additionally, ProQuest announced the name of its new ebook platform: ProQuest Ebook Central. It will launch in mid-2015 with an integration of key elements from both ebrary and EBL (Ebook Library), as well as with all-new functionality, including user-centered design for improved ebook research and management experiences from end to end. The device-neutral reader will be based on ebrary’s and will incorporate patron requirements from title discovery to the bookshelf. Source: ProQuest
Platts Rolls Out Real-Time Data-Delivery Service
Platts introduced Platts Market Data Direct, a data-delivery service that makes customized Platts daily price assessments, historical price data, and other reference data—on resources such as oil, electric power, and agricultural commodities—available in real time via an API data stream and/or Excel plug-in.The key features of the new service are as follows: - More meaningful data: options to filter out unwanted market data, thereby isolating data more pertinent to the user
- Faster access to historical data: historical data packages available immediately, rather than hours and days later
- Easier interrogation of data: customizable watch-lists and alerts; view of the latest price movements; and, ability to automate processes typically done manually, all of which aid time and process efficiency
- Easier and faster integration of Platts data into proprietary systems: ability to seamlessly incorporate price, historical and reference data into proprietary and third-party applications
