NISO Revises Usage Data Standard; Sets Strategic Plan for the Future
NISO (National Information Standards Organization) released a revised version of its Standardized Usage Statistics Harvesting Initiative (SUSHI) Protocol, which defines an automated request and response model for harvesting e-resource usage data. This model uses a web services framework that can replace the user-mediated collection of usage data reports. Because it is a generalized protocol, it works with a variety of reports, including COUNTER (Counting Online Usage of NeTworked Electronic Resources).The revised version of the standard allows the optional use of multiple filters and/or report attributes to be included in a SUSHI request and features updated documentation that supports SUSHI implementation, including SUSHI schemas, COUNTER schemas, and sample reports. Additionally, NISO’s architecture committee put out NISO Strategic Directions, a “document that identifies the trends and emerging themes that will direct the future development portfolios of standards and recommended practices,” according to the press release. SirsiDynix Changes Hands
Investment firm ICV Partners acquired SirsiDynix from Vista Equity Partners with plans to provide full support for SirsiDynix’s initiatives, ensuring that its focus on library automation solutions will not change. Its management team will also remain the same, and Vista Equity Partners will keep a minority equity position in the company. However, the acquisition will allow a revision of the board of directors and the opportunity to increase employee participation in ownership of SirsiDynix.“We’ll be looking for industry veterans to join our board and help the company further its mission to create the best user experience for our customers and their communities,” says Bill Davison, SirsiDynix’s CEO. “We feel confident that these changes will create additional value for customers, opportunity for employees, and reinforce SirsiDynix’s leadership in the industry.” Source: SirsiDynix
CCC Hosts Discussion About OA Practices
Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) published a report announcing its findings from a roundtable discussion with U.K.-based institutions and U.K. and U.S. publishers about managing open access (OA) fees on a large scale. Attendees—including ACS (American Chemical Society), IEEE, UCL (University College London), and Jisc—talked about how vendors can expand their role in addressing challenges, make article processing charges (APCs) easier to manage, and work toward simplifying and standardizing OA processes.The report (“Making Open Access Work for Authors, Institutions and Publishers”) notes, “Many of these issues could be alleviated through improvements in data sharing and development of common identifiers and vocabularies, but these must be placed in the context of broader trends and continuing uncertainties over the future of academic publishing.” Source: Copyright Clearance Center
SAGE Rolls Out Pathology-Focused OA Journal
SAGE Publications introduced Academic Pathology, a new open access (OA) journal. As the official publication of the Association of Pathology Chairs, it covers innovations in leadership and management of academic pathology departments. It will address topics such as methods for improving patient care; best practices in interprofessional, clinical partnerships around the world; and innovative pedagogical approaches to medical education and educational evaluation.“This journal seeks to cultivate rigorous scholarship in the leadership and management of the three academic missions of academic pathology—education, practice and research,” says James M. Crawford, the journal’s editor-in-chief. “We intend that such scholarship can promote the vigor of departments of academic pathology per se, enhance the posture of academic pathology in the pathology and laboratory medicine industry writ large, and help influence policy makers who will determine how pathology fits into the grander scheme of healthcare delivery.” Source: SAGE Publications
Nature Publishing Group Publishes Plant Sciences Journal
Nature Publishing Group’s (NPG) Nature Plants is the first journal in the field to feature research across the plant sciences. This new title explores all aspects of plants and their interactions with the world, including genetics, disease resistance, metabolism, and economics, as well as the social and political impacts of plant research. Another key aspect of the journal is research designed to create a sustainable future by addressing global challenges such as food security, water and land use efficiency, energy sufficiency, and climate change.The first issue offers research on the origin and evolution of maize in the U.S. Southwest and a study about floral pigmentation, among other articles. OCLC and the British Library Team Up for Document Delivery
OCLC’s WorldShare Interlibrary Loan is now fully integrated with the British Library Document Supply Service (BLDSS) to give libraries a new option for document delivery. Library staffers can confirm the availability of the documents they need before placing an order from BLDSS and view a range of choices for delivery and price, including digital delivery and simplified fee payments. The new option also simplifies copyright compliance procedures for libraries because the fees include copyright payments.“OCLC’s partnership with the British Library makes it possible for WorldShare ILL libraries to quickly determine if documents are available, and have them delivered to users—sometimes within minutes,” says Katie Birch, OCLC’s portfolio director for global product management. “These expanded options for interlibrary loan and document delivery will save library staff time and effort, and will deliver greater value for library users.” Source: OCLC
EDP Sciences and SICOT Launch Orthopedics and Traumatology OA Journal
EDP Sciences joined forces with SICOT (International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology) to create a new open access (OA) journal, SICOT-J, which is now accepting manuscripts. Part of the EDP Open portfolio, it will publish original clinical, basic, translational, and other research on the entire field of orthopedics and traumatology. Other features will include editorials, review articles, surgical technique papers, case reports, and congressional proceedings.The journal’s co-editors, Hatem Said and Jacques Caton, along with an editorial board, aim to publish quickly and broaden access to developments in the orthopedics and traumatology field.
