Gale Encourages Researchers to Work With Its Data
Gale, part of Cengage Learning, announced that it would make content from its Gale Digital Collections available to academic researchers so they can use it for data mining and textual analysis. Gale customers can request the content—which comes from research databases such as Nineteenth Century Collections Online, newspaper archives, and other collections—for use in drawing new conclusions among disparate datasets and contributing to scholarly research.Customers will also be able to access new textual analysis tools from within Gale’s digital archives: “Term cluster” and “term frequency” tools sort through text and index terms, as well as display visual representations of the data. They help researchers identify relationships between words and phrases. “Gale is taking an important, industry-leading step by making content available for researchers in this way,” says Frank Menchaca, SVP for global product management at Gale. “Data mining coupled with our new curriculum alignment service, in which Gale maps an institution’s library resources to specific areas of faculty research and course focus, is helping our academic customers realize even more value for their investment with Gale.” Source: Gale
IEEE Collaborates With edX to Offer MOOCs
IEEE partnered with edX to create a series of global continuing education courses and massive open online courses (MOOCs). As they become available, the courses will be announced on IEEE’s edX website. The first one, ISSCC Previews: Circuit and System Insights, is sponsored by the International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC). It is now accepting registrations in advance of its launch on Dec. 1, 2014.Other IEEE organizations will develop courses, including IEEE Internet of Things, IEEE Smart Cities, and the IEEE Educational Activities Board. Many of them will be free and open to the public, but students will often be able to purchase a certificate upon completion. Additionally, students will be able to earn continuing education units and professional development hours from the courses. Source: IEEE
LexisNexis Knowledge Mosaic Gets New Name and Enhanced Features
LexisNexis Legal & Professional updated its LexisNexis Knowledge Mosaic product with a streamlined user interface and new branding. Now known as Lexis Securities Mosaic to emphasize its focus on the securities practice area, the research platform gives securities and business professionals enhanced functionality, alignment with the Lexis Advance portfolio, and the addition of Canadian SEDAR (System for Electronic Document Analysis and Retrieval) filings content with about 4 million documents dating from 1997.Compliance, transactional, disclosure, and regulatory information is now readily available and includes historical as well as up-to-date content. A new Quick Search feature lets users pull SEC (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission) no-action letters, private placement memoranda, and SEC and SEDAR filings directly from the Lexis Securities Mosaic homepage. APA Ebooks Are Now Available From ebrary
The American Psychological Association (APA) signed an agreement with ebrary (a ProQuest business) to make 250-plus ebooks available through ebrary’s platform. Libraries can select individual ebooks to purchase and choose one of three models: perpetual archive, demand-driven acquisition, or short-term loans.Most of APA’s scholarly, professional, and reference titles published from 2009 to 2014 are included in the agreement, along with some LifeTools: Books for the General Public ebooks. Titles in the APA Handbooks in Psychology series are not available from ebrary, but they can be purchased directly from APA and will be delivered via the PsycNET platform. “By teaming with ebrary to distribute electronic versions of APA’s scholarly, professional and trade titles, APA is providing libraries with more flexible options for incorporating our titles into their collections. APA is continuing to seek out new partnerships to increase the accessibility of our content,” says Gary R. The Getty Foundation Houses Free, Online Catalogs
The Getty Foundation, part of the J. Paul Getty Trust, launched a collection of free, online museum catalogs. The OSCI (Online Scholarly Catalogue Initiative) is composed of digital publications from eight institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Tate, and the Walker Art Center. An interactive, multimedia catalog from the Smithsonian’s Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery is one of the prototypes for digital publications that the OSCI engineered.“Publishing scholarly collection catalogues is a critical part of a museum’s mission, yet printed volumes are costly to produce and difficult to update,” says Deborah Marrow, the Getty Foundation’s director. “Digital publishing presents an attractive, interactive alternative, but with complex challenges. Approaching these issues as a team has been the only way to develop models for the museum field.” The catalogs are available for public use as a resource for study. For example, researchers can view detailed images of artworks, conservation documentation, videos of artists, and scholarly essays, as well as take notes in the margins and export citations to their desktops. Cisco Releases Business Collaboration App
Cisco rolled out Project Squared, a free, cloud-based collaboration app that helps business teams have multiparty meetings (via chat, audio, or video) and share content with colleagues inside and outside their companies. Project Squared is built on the new Cisco Collaboration Cloud platform, which is aligned with its Intercloud strategy. Users can access the app from their iOS- or Android-based mobile devices and from their web browsers on desktop computers.App users start a “room” on any topic and invite others to join. When the team is assembled, members can share messages, post files, and begin voice or video calls. They can view files alongside messages and get notifications, as well as integrate Project Squared with calendars, WebEx, and other business tools. “We created Project Squared and the Cisco Collaboration Cloud platform to … [make] it easy to stay constantly connected to the people, projects and ideas that matter most. We have lots of ideas on how to continue to enhance the Project Squared experience, and we’re on a mission to keep integrating with important business tools so that your rooms truly help you do your best work,” says Rowan Trollope, SVP and general manager of Cisco’s collaboration technology group.
