World Library of Science Aims to Open Science to All Students
UNESCO launched the World Library of Science (WLoS) in collaboration with Macmillan Science and Education. This free, online education resource is designed to give students around the world equal access to the latest science information. It also allows students to participate in discussions with their peers in a shared learning environment.Along with a community hub to facilitate sharing and the creation of online classes, the WLoS has more than 300 digital articles, 25 ebooks, and 70-plus videos from Nature Education, the educational division of Nature Publishing Group (NPG). The content can be distributed and tailored for any educational or noncommercial use. “The content of the World Library of Science is meant to inspire more learning and curiosity, and help train students and teachers alike, both in the content and cultural impacts of scientific discovery. Future plans involve expansion of life and physical science subjects, as well as translation of resources into multiple languages,” the WLoS’s About page states. Source: UNESCO
Intota Debuts Workflow Feature; NSA Docs Go Digital
Intota, ProQuest’s library services platform, introduced a workflow feature called My Intota, which gives librarians “a central point for managing the broad range of tasks associated with e-resources …” and streamlines their day-to-day collection management workflow, according to its introductory PDF.My Intota’s Activities workspace helps libraries manage their e-resources by centralizing all collection management notifications. Its Databases workspace aggregates all of a library’s subscription databases into an easy-to-manage list. These workspaces are accessible via a single interface that includes multiple filtering capabilities along with the option to view expanded details relevant to a specific task. In other news, ProQuest announced the digitization of documents related to the National Security Agency (NSA), including those leaked by Edward Snowden, responses to Snowden’s disclosure, and explorations of the history of electronic surveillance. The Digital National Security Archive (DNSA), created by ProQuest and the National Security Archive, will feature these materials in its upcoming collection, Electronic Surveillance and the National Security Agency: From Shamrock to Snowden. Thomson Reuters Announces Top 100 Global Innovators
The Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters released its 2014 Top 100 Global Innovators list. This fourth annual quantitative ranking of innovation uses a series of patent-related metrics to determine which organizations from around the world to include: overall patent volume, patent grant success rate, global reach of the portfolio, and patent influence (determined by citations). The top 100 innovators generated the equivalent of $3.69 trillion in revenue in 2013, as well as increased their R&D investment by almost 17%.Asia has the largest share of innovators for the first time, with 46 companies on the list. North America has 36 companies on the list, and Europe has 18. The fields with the most representation are the semiconductor and electronic components industry and the computer hardware industry. “By focusing exclusively on quantitative analysis of global business’ intellectual property portfolios, we are able to identify not only what companies are inventing the most, but also how aggressively they are protecting those inventions,” says Basil Moftah, president of Thomson Reuters’ Intellectual Property & Science business. “This list of 100 companies represents the absolute vanguard of innovation—the organizations that are driving new breakthroughs, creating new jobs and igniting the global economy. …” Thomson Reuters’ infographic describes the list in further detail.

Network Alliance Is Approved to Distribute Intuit's QuickBooks
IT management solutions provider Network Alliance will deliver hosted QuickBooks services to its clients through a partnership with Intuit, which offers financial solutions to individuals and companies. Network Alliance now owns licensed copies of the QuickBooks software for distribution as a hosted, fully managed solution through its own hosted infrastructure.The partnership allows Network Alliance to expand its service offerings and will bring Intuit’s line of cloud-based accounting software services to Network Alliance’s clients. RCGP Taps DynaMed to Provide Learning Resources
The U.K.’s RCGP (Royal College of General Practitioners) accredited EBSCO Health’s DynaMed clinical reference tool in order to give general practitioners (GPs) an additional source for learning credits. RCGP has a professional body of 50,000 GPs who are dedicated to raising the standards of patient care through professional development.RCGP’s own CPD (continuing professional development) resources will now be augmented by DynaMed’s evidence-based information on more than 3,200 diagnosis, disease, and treatment topics. DISYS Enhances Its Cloud-Enablement Tool
Digital Intelligence Systems, LLC (DISYS), a global technology services firm and Amazon Web Services (AWS) consulting partner, updated its Sirro cloud-enablement product. Activities within the platform are now streamlined, and other features were enhanced to maximize user value and productivity, as well as drive more benefits and value directly from the product.Key updates include an automated task scheduler; the ability to create, delete, and import key pairs; a configuration management database (CMDB) to keep track of changes to AWS assets; and an AWS asset status report email directly from Sirro. “This latest version of Sirro extends the business value and utility our customers are receiving from their cloud presence that aligns with the latest trends in the evolving larger solutions landscape,” says Ahmar Abbas, DISYS’ VP of global services. Springer Launches Small Business and Entrepreneurship Book Series
Springer Science+Business Media and FGF (Sponsors Founding Research—a German, Austrian, and Swiss association of scholars) signed an agreement to create a book series titled FGF Studies in Small Business and Entrepreneurship. Their partnership expands Springer’s portfolio of business publications and the reach of FGF members’ works.The series will cover topics such as management, finance, marketing, and economics; it will look at topics on individual, organizational, network, economic, and societal levels. Proposals can be submitted to the editors-in-chief, and international proposals are encouraged. The first title will be published in summer 2015. Source: Springer Science+Business Media
