Historical Photography Collection Comes to Columbia University
Columbia University Libraries/Information Services’ Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library acquired the late Arthur Rothstein’s collection of photography prints and negatives, personal and professional papers, videos, and other materials, which were donated by his wife. Rothstein captured American and international events during the 20th century, from the Great Depression to the Reagan administration. He worked for organizations such as the Farm Security Administration and the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA), as well as magazines such as Look and Parade.“My mother, Grace Rothstein, and our entire family, is dedicated to seeing my father’s legacy of photojournalistic insight and integrity preserved as an example for future generations,” says Dan Rothstein. “Establishing a home for this collection at Columbia, where he studied and taught for many years, is a satisfying realization of that goal.” Source: Columbia University Libraries/Information Services
Elsevier Offers Medical Reference Digests
Elsevier introduced Clinics Collections, a series of multidisciplinary, general medical reference digests designed to provide healthcare professionals, specialists, nurses, and other practitioners with an overview of common medical conditions and significant developments in the field.The series uses updated content from Elsevier’s Clinics Review Articles database that is targeted to specific practice areas such as asthma, obesity, and pain management. Titles can be purchased as ebooks or print books at elsevierhealth.com. “Clinics Collections help fill a content gap for many healthcare professionals and providers, particularly general practitioners who are caring for patients with these widespread conditions and their associated co-morbidities,” says Adrianne Brigido, digital publisher at Elsevier. “Clinics Collections is a continuation of Elsevier’s commitment to provide trusted content that medical professionals rely on to support optimal patient care and outcomes.” Source: Elsevier
SAGE Publications Takes Over Business and Economy Journal
SAGE Publications acquired Competition & Change: The Journal of Global Business and Political Economy from Maney Publishing. The journal will resume publication with Volume 19 in January 2015.Competition & Change brings together research in the business and political economy fields to help social scientists understand broad business issues and their impact on topics that include economic organization and performance. Its editors ask for submissions from international scholars with backgrounds in fields such as political and cultural economy, business economics, organizational sociology, and economic geography. “[O]ur portfolio of journals has … developed and as such it was decided that we could no longer offer the journal the strategic support needed to further build its impact and readership. In SAGE we found a publisher who has a close strategic fit to both the journal’s goals and vision and a strong publishing portfolio within its core fields,” says Michael Gallico, Maney Publishing’s managing director and CEO. LexisNexis Augments Lexis Practice Advisor
LexisNexis Legal & Professional updated its Lexis Practice Advisor with Lexis Practice Advisor Labor & Employment, a resource that offers labor and employment attorneys guidance, practice notes, model forms, and other supporting documents that help them deliver expert counsel, draft documents, and perform other tasks more efficiently.“Labor and employment attorneys are responsible for a wide variety of complex assignments—from preparing contracts and policies, to providing counsel on compliance and labor issues, to assessing risks,” says Kevin Elphick, VP of product planning for Lexis Practice Advisor. This new resource is designed to streamline attorneys’ workflows, keep them up-to-date on practical implications for trends in their practice, and to bring associates up-to-speed. Cisco Honors Internet of Things Innovators
Cisco announced the winners of its international Internet of Things (IoT) grand challenges, which were “aimed at recognizing, promoting and accelerating the adoption of breakthrough technologies and products that contribute to the growth and evolution of the IoT,” according to the press release. Cisco awarded prize money and will work with supporting organizations to provide the winners with mentoring, training, and business expertise.The Cisco IoT Innovation Grand Challenge winners are relayr, which provides simple and inexpensive tools for developers working on the IoT; Waygum, which helps developers create mobile-enabled industrial applications by connecting mobile devices to machinery; and Toymail, which integrates the IoT with toys to encourage communication among family members. The Cisco Security Grand Challenge has several winners, including Excalibur, a startup that focuses on updating authentication processes to be compatible with the IoT. The IoT Innovation Grand Challenge for Greater China recognized Mash5, a mobile application development company, and ZillionSource, which offers a cloud solutions-based IoT platform. Cisco will partner with a global network of IoT-related companies, local organizations, and nonprofits that are dedicated to women in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields to launch the IoT World Forum Young Women’s Innovation Grand Challenge, which will be open for submissionson Nov. 15, 2014. Internet of Things Company Charts New Course
Axiros, an Internet of Things (IoT) device and service management company, rolled out enhanced products and expanded its business in order to participate more fully in managing IoT devices. Kudos Platform Gains Web of Science Citations
Thomson Reuters agreed to add Web of Science citation data to Kudos’ author dashboards. This data, which features science, social sciences, and arts and humanities content, will allow Kudos’ authors to view their publication performance in order to measure their works’ impact. The dashboard already includes other metrics such as downloads from participating publishers’ sites, altmetric data, and click-throughs from author-sharing activities on Kudos’ platform.“Authors are being exposed to an increasingly complex landscape of metrics relating to their research activities. It’s our ambition at Kudos to bring all these metrics together from across the multiple platforms that researchers use today to publish and share information about themselves and their work,” says Melinda Kenneway, a director and co-founder of Kudos.
