Beyond Coping: Libraries Stepping Up to Meet Community Needs During the Pandemic

Looking back at the past year, initial coping strategies during the pandemic were good, but not enough. Dedicated, innovative library workers soon realized that they needed to do more. The pandemic, like any other natural or human-caused disaster, had created new community needs. So, librarians began reaching out to their communities and expanding their services. Here are some of the important actions they took.

Initiated in 2005, Sunshine Week features events sponsored by groups interested in the public's right to know about its government, including government agencies, news organizations, universities, and libraries."

The Library Corp. (TLC) updated its CARL ILS: CARL-X is on version 9.6.8, CARL-Connect Staff is on version 1.6.4, CARL-Connect Discovery is on version 3.6.2.1, and CARL-X APIs are on version 1.9.8.

CNN Looks at Libraries and Censorship of Children's Books

So They're Getting Creative When It Comes to Offensive Kids' Books" for CNN: "It's hard to imagine a children's library collection without [certain classic] titles. It's up to librarians, then, to determine whether those books and others with racist content still deserve a spot on their shelves." ...

ALA Endorses FCC's Emergency Broadband Benefit Program

ALA released a statement applauding the Emergency Broadband Benefit program, established Feb. 25, 2021, by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to "provide qualifying households discounts on their internet service bills and an opportunity to receive a discount on a computer or tablet."

NISO Plus Conference Delivers Global Conversations and Global Connections

Global Conversations :: Global Connections seems an unlikely theme for a conference held after a year of pandemic lockdown, when people stayed home and travel became a rarity—yet the second annual NISO Plus conference, held Feb. 22–25, delivered exactly what its tagline promised. Along the way, it demonstrated that, travel restrictions notwithstanding, the information world remains as closely connected as ever.
