Happy new year! As we ring in 2017 and look forward to what is sure to be another eventful year for libraries, information professionals, and information services, it's time to reflect on the major industry happenings in 2016. Here's an overview of the topics NewsBreaks covered in the past year.

ARL Plans 2017 Fair Use/Fair Dealing Week

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) announced that Fair Use/Fair Dealing Week will be Feb. 20-24, 2017. This annual celebration of the Fair Use doctrine the in U.S. and the fair dealing policy in Canada and elsewhere was created to spread awareness of and explain the issues surrounding these copyright exceptions and to celebrate successful fair use stories.

Springer Nature and figshare Improve Journal Discoverability

figshare entered into a new partnership with Springer Nature to host supplementary data for 300-plus journals from BioMed Central and SpringerOpen.

Gale Offers Videos in Education Products

The Past Year in Congress and a Look Forward

In a congressional year that many expected to be slow, if not quiet, due to the presidential election and continuing partisan strains between Congress and the Obama administration, Congress still managed to enact more than 210 new laws, with nearly 20 approved during the post-election, lame duck session that ended in late December. Granted, a number of them are primarily housekeeping or ceremonial in nature, but others could have a significant impact on a wide variety of citizens and businesses.
