Getting the Most Out of Discovery Service

Libraries have to do their fair share of marketing for their programs and services. Fliers, posters, newsletters, you name it. But there's one aspect of library promotion that goes on behind the scenes: showcasing what materials libraries have in their collections. That's why libraries need to subscribe to a discovery service to help patrons find the resources they need in their library catalog. Here's an overview of the four major discovery services, including their newly implemented features.

Innovative Acquires VTLS
|
|
Innovative will give customers a new level of product development and support with its acquisition of library automation solutions provider VTLS. VTLS' Virtua, VITAL, Chamo, and other products will be rebranded to include VTLS in their names, and Innovative will incorporate VTLS' consulting and support expertise into its own corporate resources.

Equity Investment Boosts HighWire Press Initiatives

HighWire Press, an auxiliary unit of Stanford University Libraries, received an equity investment from Accel-KKR that will support its strategic growth initiatives and its digital innovations for internet-based publishing. HighWire Press' business will now be able to operate as a stand-alone enterprise, with Accel-KKR taking a majority stake in the company and Stanford University maintaining a minority stake.

ProQuest Gains Texas Newspaper Archive
|
|
ProQuest added the digital archive of the daily Austin American-Statesman newspaper to its ProQuest Historical Newspapers collection. Researchers now have access to primary sources about Texas and the Southwest from 1871 through the 1900s.

Playing the Numbers: NISO/NASIG Focus On Best Practices for Library Usage Statistics

On May 21, NISO, the National Information Standards Organization, and the North American Serials Interest Group (NASIG) co-sponsored a webinar intended to help more "effectively understand and apply usage data," which is "an important skill for librarians to master as they attempt to analyze their collections and justify their expenses to administrations."
