Who’s Who in Ebooks

Just as books don't magically appear on library shelves, ebooks don't automatically pop up in a library's online catalog. Librarians work with ebook vendors to get econtent into the hands, or rather, onto the e-readers, of their patrons. With the many e-lending options now on the market, here are five of the big ones with a few of their major features for cross comparison.

EBSCO Introduces 15 New Ebook Subject Sets
|
|
EBSCO eBooks and Audiobooks created 15 new subject set packages for libraries. These sets of titles from leading publishers are designed to simplify collection development by helping librarians start or enhance their ebook programs with subject-specific ebooks. The new subject sets are available in addition to collections of frontlist titles from EBSCO's collection development team.

ByWater Solutions Integrates OverDrive and Koha
|
|
ByWater Solutions recently launched a cooperative effort to integrate OverDrive search with the Koha open source ILS. Eight of ByWater Solutions' library partners will work with the open source support community on the project, which uses OverDrive Integration Development to integrate search results from a library's OverDrive ebook collection directly into its online catalog's search results.

Scirus Says Goodbye

The Scirus search engine, owned by Elsevier, posted the following message on its homepage: "Scirus is set to retire in early 2014. An official retirement date will be posted here as soon as it is determined. To ensure a smooth transition, we are informing you now so that you have sufficient time to find an alternative search solution for science-specific content."

New Open Government Tool for Municipalities

Transparency in local government just became easier thanks to RecordTrac, a web-based application designed to help cities more efficiently manage, respond to, and track incoming requests for public records. For the public, the Code for America tool provides an easy way to request public records and track progress made on each request. The system also allows the public to search previous public record requests and access previously produced records.
