Review of 2012 and Trends Watch 2013

2012 was quite an intense and turbulent year—wilder weather, the London Olympics (and a gymnastics gold for Gabby Douglas), the contentious U.S. Presidential election, Facebook's disastrous IPO, the iPhone 5, the iPad Mini, patent lawsuits, and, as we neared the end of 2012, the "Fiscal Cliff." And drat, that was too close for comfort. Over the past year, the most-read news article on the infotoday.com site was my NewsLink Spotlight article posted Dec. 3, 2012, "The Fight for a Free and Open Internet." It clearly touched a nerve.

Atlas and OCLC Announce CONTENTdm and Aeon Integration

Atlas Systems, a provider of time-saving solutions for libraries, and OCLC announced the integration of the CONTENTdm Digital Collection Management Software and Atlas System's Aeon software for managing special collections user services. The integration enables end users of CONTENTdm collections to place an online request to view the original item in a library's special collections reading room or order publication-quality reproductions via Aeon, paying any usage fees online with a credit card. The University of Miami (Fla.) and the Claremont Colleges Library (Calif.) have successfully piloted the integration.

Wiley Acquires Assets of FIZ Chemie Berlin

John Wiley & Sons, Inc. announced that it has acquired the assets of the FIZ Chemie Berlin, a provider of online database products for organic and industrial chemists. The acquisition aligns with the company's long-term strategy to support research, learning, and professional practice through high-quality content and services. Wiley is expanding its presence in Berlin with the new venture providing roles for more than 30 skilled information professionals.

eBooks on EBSCOhost to be Available Via Ingram’s OASIS

EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO) and Ingram Content Group Inc. announced an agreement aimed at benefitting mutual customers of Ingram's OASIS (Online Acquisitions and Selection Information System) and eBooks on EBSCOhost. The agreement will allow libraries to order eBooks on EBSCOhost through OASIS. EBSCO is the first outside ebook provider to be incorporated into OASIS.
