The Challenging Landscape of Ebooks in Libraries

The overall growth in digital content of all kinds, and in particular, the growing importance and acceptance of ebooks, has clearly presented great opportunities for libraries, as well as plenty of challenges. Many libraries are coping with decreasing budgets while at the same time experiencing increased demand for content and services. Challenges include limited availability of ebooks from publishers, increasing demands for tech support with ebook readers and mobile devices, cumbersome borrowing processes, and minimal discoverability of ebook content. Two recent reports shed some light on the current situation, providing interesting statistics and perspectives.

Leadership Directories (LDI), a provider of background and contact information for U.S. decision makers, announced the acquisition of the CQ Press Directories and First Street. CQ Press is owned by SAGE Publications, an independent international publisher of journals, books, and electronic media.

LexisNexis Launches Meeting Prep Tool for Sales and Business Professionals

LexisNexis Legal & Professional announced the launch of LexisNexis Smart Meeting, a new meeting preparation tool that integrates with Microsoft Outlook Calendar to push timely news and company updates to sales and business professionals prior to meetings with customers, prospects, and business partners so that they can drive more sales and close more deals.

IHS Acquires Invention Machine and GlobalSpec

IHS Inc. acquired Invention Machine for about $40 million. Invention Machine is a provider of semantic search technology that uncovers relevant insights held within a wealth of internal and external knowledge sources. Their patented semantic question-answering software engine leads engineers and knowledge workers to information quickly and enables them to rapidly digest it to make better decisions. As previously announced, IHS also has completed the closing of its acquisition of GlobalSpec Inc., from Warburg Pincus LLC for $135 million.

Project Gutenberg Launches Repository for Self-Published Works

The generous souls at Project Gutenberg opened a new venue supplementing their traditional collection of public domain classics. (And, by the way, that collection of usually all the works, even minor ones, of major authors and the major works of minor authors now runs more than 40,000.) But what about contemporary works, particularly by people who have not found or perhaps do not want to go with traditional publishers? Now Project Gutenberg has opened a separate collection and discovery area for such works referred to as a Self-Publishing Portal. Anyone can access and search the site to view and/or download documents.
