What a lot of activity we've seen lately in online legal services—acquisitions, investments, new traction in the market, and even newly launched services. The traditional methods of practicing law have been challenged of late, with some of the work formerly done by lawyers now able to be performed by technology. And, the rise of free sources of legal information, such as Fastcase and Justia.com, continue to rock the market. Yes, we live in interesting and disruptive times.

LexisNexis Reaches Long-Term Content Agreement With The New York Times

LexisNexis announced it has signed a long-term extension of its worldwide licensing agreement with The New York Times that secures content from the premier daily news source for LexisNexis customers for the next 10 years. The agreement extends a three-decade relationship and ensures continued availability of news stories and editorial coverage. New to the agreement is the inclusion of all The New York Times blog content and The New York Times Real-Time Full Text Feed service.

Thomson Reuters Adds New Patent Authorities to Derwent World Patents Index

The IP Solutions business of Thomson Reuters announced that its Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI) database has expanded global coverage to include patent records from the patent-issuing authorities of Poland, Hong Kong, and the Gulf Cooperation Council (the GCC is a regional office registering patents in the following Member States: Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, State of Qatar, State of Bahrain, State of Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Sultanate of Oman).

CIOs Surveyed Say Workplace Communication Will Favor Real-Time Tools

Email may soon become the new snail mail, according to a new Robert Half Technology survey. More than half (54%) of chief information officers (CIOs) interviewed recently said real-time workplace communication tools will surpass traditional email in popularity within the next 5 years. The survey was developed by Robert Half Technology, a provider of information technology (IT) professionals on a project and full-time basis. It was conducted by an independent research firm and is based on telephone interviews with more than 1,400 CIOs from companies across the U.S. with 100 or more employees.

R.R. Donnelley Acquires LibreDigital

R.R. Donnelley & Sons, Co. (RRD), a "global provider of integrated communications" that is best known as a traditional printing company, announced it has acquired LibreDigital, which has been a pioneer of digital replicas for books and periodicals. With the acquisition, RRD solidifies its expansion into the digital arena and gains a solid company and some interesting products that extend digital content across multiple channels. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
