Ebook Developments Were HOT at ALA

Looking over the program of presentations and panels and at the vendors exhibiting at the recent American Library Association Annual (ALA) conference, it's clear that librarians are focused on embracing the expanding digital world and specifically on providing ebooks as part of library services. Of course, along with that come all the issues and considerations involved: copyright/DRM, rising costs of digital collections, format issues, and the rapidly evolving publishing market. For librarians, it's all about providing enhanced services through the emerging technologies. They had a lot to look at and think about in New Orleans.

LoislawConnect to Take Legal Research to the Next Level

Wolters Kluwer Law & Business announced that it is releasing an enhanced version of its Loislaw legal research platform. The new platform, called LoislawConnect, will deliver a faster, more streamlined way to conduct research within the same flat fee structure that Loislaw users have come to depend upon. LoislawConnect was previewed at the 2011 AALL Annual Meeting in Philadelphia July 23-26.

Elsevier announced the availability of an audio reader application from iSpeech, provider of cloud-based speech technology and mobile apps, on SciVerse Applications beta. The iSpeech Audio Reader is the latest in a growing list of applications enhancing the use of SciVerse ScienceDirect content to improve researchers' workflows.

Wellcome Library Partners With ProQuest to Digitize Early European Books

The Wellcome Library announced a partnership with ProQuest, U.K. to digitize more than 15,000 volumes from the library's rare book collection as part of the Wellcome Digital Library pilot project. The collection will be made available through ProQuest's new Early European Books (EEB) database, a sister project to the Early English Books Online.

The End of an Era for Google Labs—Innovation Now Via Acquisition and Pontification

The media, Wall Street, and assorted bloggers were adrenalized by Larry Page's announcement that Google Labs was going dark. That's right. Google Labs. The quasar of innovation at the Google: Shut down, lights off, out of business, and repurposed ... What's gone? Obviously the Google Labs site where I could "play around with prototypes of some of Google's wild and crazy ideas and offer feedback directly to the engineers who developed them." I do not think there will be much of a change in Google's innovation pace. In fact, it may accelerate in social media.
