Review of the Year 2010 and Trends Watch 2011

The year 2010 saw the emergence of the iPad, the Android, and apps—lots and lots of apps. The market for mobile computing skyrocketed this year. And, information industry providers were quick to jump in with content delivery apps of all kinds. But I actually think it's a toss-up for top news of the year. While some say 2010 was the year of the app, there's also a very strong case that it could be considered the year of the ebook. And in our information industry, you could make a claim for it being the year of the platform relaunch (and I did, in my December 2010 NewsBreak Update column in Information Today,.

University Presses to Publish Books Online at JSTOR

Five leading university presses—Chicago, Minnesota, North Carolina, Princeton, and Yale—are at the forefront of a new effort to publish scholarly books online as part of the nonprofit service JSTOR. Their books in the humanistic, social, and scientific disciplines are expected to be available in 2012.

ProQuest Acquires Ebook Pioneer ebrary

With the goal to "accelerate the process of serious research," ProQuest has acquired ebrary, a respected, pioneering ebook provider to libraries and corporations. The acquisition will bring a fully functioning ebook platform to ProQuest to add to its extensive content platform. The quarter of a million ebooks from some 500 publishers will eventually be fully searchable with ProQuest's journals, reference works, newspapers, dissertations, and multimedia. Financial terms were not disclosed.
