12 Oscar Records That Have Already Been Broken After the 2025 Nominations Announcement
Emilia Pérez broke the record for the most Oscar nominations received by a non-English-language film after receiving 13 nominations in 2025 (the record was previously held jointly by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma, which both got 10 nominations.
Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez) became the first openly transgender actress to get nominated in the Best Actress category (or any acting category for that matter). The first openly transgender person to get nominated in any category was Angela Morley, who was nominated at the 1975 ceremony in the Scoring: Original Song Score and Adaptation or Scoring: Adaptation category for The Little Prince.
Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here) became only the second Brazilian ever to be nominated for an acting performance at the Oscars, following her mother Fernanda Montenegro, who was nominated for Central Station at the 1999 Oscars.
For the second time in history, two French directors are nominated in the Best Director category—Jacques Audiard is nominated for Emilia Pérez, while Coralie Fargeat is nominated for The Substance (the first time this occurred was in 1974); additionally, Fargeat’s nomination makes it the first time in history that two French female directors are nominated in consecutive years, following last year’s Best Director nomination of Justine Triet for Anatomy of a Fall.
Diane Warren tied the record for the most nominated individual without a win, regardless of a category—in 2025, she earned her 16th Oscar nomination in the Best Original Song category for “The Journey” from the movie The Six Triple Eight, which puts her in a tie with recording mixer Greg P. Russell. (Warren did win the Honorary Oscar in 2023, but she has yet to win an Oscar in a competitive category.)
Warren broke out of her tie with Marilyn Bergman, and she is now the most nominated woman in the Best Original Song Category—Warren earned her 16th nomination in 2025, while Bergman had 15 nominations in the category.

Warren tied a long-standing record of Sammy Cahn, and now they share the record for the most consecutive nominations in the Best Original Song category—8 years. Cahn was nominated consecutively between 1955 and 1962, and Warren has been nominated every year since the 2018 ceremony, making 2025 her eighth consecutive nomination.
Paul Tazewell (Wicked) became the first Black male costume designer to be nominated twice in the Best Costume Design category—he was first nominated in 2022 for West Side Story.
Chris Sanders (The Wild Robot) became the most nominated individual without a win in the Best Animated Feature category—The Wild Robot is his fourth nomination following nominations for Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, and The Croods, but he has yet to win.
Pixar increased its record as the most nominated studio in the Best Animated Feature category—Inside Out 2 was its 19th nomination.
France (Emilia Pérez) increased its record as the country with the most nominations in the Best International Feature category.
25-Plus Records That Could Be Broken at the 2025 Academy Awards Ceremony
OVERALL
Emilia Pérez, which received 13 nominations, could tie or break the record for the most Oscars won by a single film in one night. The record is currently held by three films that managed to win 11 Oscars in one night—Ben-Hur, Titanic, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Emilia Pérez would need to win 11 Oscars to tie the record and 12 Oscars to surpass the record.
Emilia Pérez, which received 13 nominations, could tie or break the record for the most Oscars won by a non-English-speaking film in one night—the record is currently held by four films that managed to win four Oscars each: Fanny and Alexander; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Parasite; and All Quiet On The Western Front.
Sean Baker could tie Walt Disney’s record for the most Oscar wins in a single night—Disney won four awards in 1954, and Baker is nominated in four categories at the 2025 Oscars for Anora: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Editing, and Best Original Screenplay.
BEST PICTURE
Emilia Pérez or I’m Still Here could become only the second non-English-language movie to win Best Picture following Parasite—Emilia Pérez would become the first movie in Spanish to win, while I’m Still Here would become the first movie in Portuguese to win.
The Substance could become only the second horror film to ever win Best Picture following The Silence of the Lambs, which won Best Picture more than 30 years ago in 1992.
Dune: Part Two could become only the third sequel to win Best Picture, following The Godfather Part II and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
Wicked could become only the third fantasy film to win Best Picture, following The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and The Shape Of Water.
Anora could become the fourth movie to win the Palme d’Or from the Cannes Film Festival as well as the Best Picture Oscar (thus joining The Lost Weekend, Marty, and Parasite).
BEST DIRECTOR
Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) could become the first French female director to win in the Best Director category.

BEST ACTOR
Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown) could become the youngest actor to win in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category—the current holder of the record is Adrien Brody, who was 29 years and 11 months old when he won for The Pianist, and Chalamet will be 29 years and 2 months old; additionally, Chalamet, who is French-American, would become only the second French actor to win in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category, following Jean Dujardin.
Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice) could become the first Romanian actor to win in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category (Stan was born in Constanta, Romania, and he is Romanian-American) and the first Romanian to win for a leading acting performance.
Adrien Brody (The Brutalist) could join an elite group of 10 actors who have won the Best Actor in a Leading Role Oscar two or more times—Brody previously won for The Pianist in 2003.
BEST ACTRESS

Cynthia Erivo (Wicked) could become only the second Black actress to ever win in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category and the first in more than 20 years—the first and only Black Best Actress in a Leading Role winner is Halle Berry, who won for Monster’s Ball at the 2002 ceremony.
Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here) could become the first Brazilian actress to ever win in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category, the first Latin American actress to ever win in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category, and the first Brazilian to win for an acting performance. (Torres would be only the second Brazilian-born Oscar winner ever, following Luciana Arrighi, who won the Oscar in 1994 in the Best Art Direction category for Howards End.)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Yura Borisov (Anora) could become the first Russian actor to win in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role category.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Isabella Rossellini (Conclave) could become the first Italian actress to win in the Best Actress in a Supporting Role category.
Rossellini could also become the first actress in history to win an Oscar for an acting performance following a mother’s win for acting (Rossellini’s mother is legendary actress Ingrid Bergman, who won three acting Oscars). Meanwhile, the only child who went on to win an acting Oscar following their parent winning an Oscar for acting is Angelina Jolie, who won the Best Supporting Actress for Girl, Interrupted following her father Jon Voight’s win in the Best Actor category for Coming Home. Jane Fonda and her father Henry Fonda also both won Oscars for acting; however, in this instance, Jane Fonda was the first to win two Oscars for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Klute and Coming Home), and her father won his Best Actor Oscar for On Golden Pond years later. Additionally, Liza Minnelli won the Best Actress Oscar for Cabaret following her mother’s win; however, Judy Garland’s Oscar was a special, noncompetitive, honorary Juvenile Academy Award recognizing young performers.
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
Ed Lachman (Maria) could break the record for the oldest person to win in the Best Cinematography category—currently, the record is held by Conrad L. Hall, who won posthumously at the age 76. By the time of the ceremony, Hall would have been 76 years and 9 months old, but Lachman will be 76 years and 11 months old at the time of the 2025 Academy Awards ceremony, which would make him the oldest winner in the category.
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Mona Fastvold (The Brutalist) could become the first Norwegian to win in the Best Original Screenplay category (or any screenwriting category for that matter).
BEST COSTUME DESIGN
Paul Tazewell (Wicked) could become the first Black male costume designer to win an Oscar in the Best Costume Design category and only the second Black designer to ever win, following Ruth E. Carter, who won two Oscars in the category for the Black Panther franchise.
BEST ORIGINAL SONG
Elton John (“Never Too Late” from Elton John: Never Too Late) could join an elite group of nine songwriters who won the Best Original Song Oscar three or more times—John has won two times in the past (for “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” and “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again”).
Diane Warren (“The Journey” from The Six Triple Eight) could finally get rid of her record as the most nominated individual without a win—Warren has been nominated in the Best Original Song category a record-breaking 16 times, which not only makes her the most nominated individual in the Best Original Song category without a win, but it also makes her the overall most nominated individual without a competitive win, regardless of a category (in a tie with a recording mixer Greg P. Russell).

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
Chris Sanders (The Wild Robot) could get rid of his record as the most nominated individual without a win in the Best Animated Feature category—The Wild Robot is his fourth nomination following nominations for Lilo & Stitch, How To Train Your Dragon, and The Croods, but he has yet to win; however, Nick Park (Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl) or Mark Nielsen (Inside Out 2) could join a rare group of eight people who have won two or more times in the Best Animated Feature category—Park previously won for Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit in 2006, while Nielsen won for Toy Story 4 in 2020.
Pixar could increase its record as the studio with the most wins in the Best Animated Feature category—Inside Out 2 could be its 12th victory.

Wallace & Gromit or Inside Out could join Toy Story and become the only franchise with multiple wins in the Best Animated Feature category. Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 both won, while Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and Inside Out were the first movies to win, and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl and Inside Out 2 both have a chance to win in 2025.
BEST INTERNATIONAL FEATURE
Brazil (I’m Still Here) or Latvia (Flow) could win their first Oscar in the Best International Feature category.
BEST EDITING
Sean Baker (Anora) could become only the third director to win an Oscar for editing a movie they also directed, joining James Cameron (who won for editing Titanic) and Alfonso Cuarón (who won for editing Gravity); however, Baker could become the first to win for a sole editing credit, since both Cameron and Cuarón won as part of a group.
