LEXIS-NEXIS Takes a Precautionary Y2K Break
by
Posted On December 20, 1999
And you thought your holiday season was going to be rough! As the New Year's Eve parties saluting the arrival of the new millennium reach their peak, vendor staff will still be at work, while their clients get a life. In case you planned to greet the new century doing a LEXIS-NEXIS search, you're out of luck (at least when doing a classic search with their proprietary software — browser-based searching will still work), per the company's recently posted notice (see below), which they have asked the information professional community to circulate and share.

Speaking of luck, how many fingers and toes do you think LEXIS-NEXIS staff will have crossed at 00:04, 1/1/2k? Here's LEXIS-NEXIS' notice, verbatim:

Brief Precautionary Y2K Shut Down for LEXIS-NEXIS Classic Search System

The LEXIS-NEXIS services will perform a precautionary Year 2000 shutdown of the traditional research system (the one requiring LEXIS-NEXIS Research Software) around 11:50 p.m. EST on Friday, December 31. It will be brought back to life immediately after the rollover at approximately 00:05 a.m. EST. The system is being shut down just prior to the rollover to the new year as a safeguard.

Browser-based research options will be available. These options include lexis.com and LEXIS-NEXIS Universe (and other members of the Universe family). LEXIS-NEXIS Research Manager 6.2.1 or 6.2.2., which work with the same "behind the scenes" system as browser-based products, will also be available.

Other routine daily and weekend down times for the classic system will also occur during the Y2K rollover weekend:

Daily 2:00-2:15 a.m. EST

Sunday 1:00-8:00 a.m. EST

THIS IS A YEAR 2000 READINESS DISCLOSURE UNDER AND SUBJECT TO THE UNITED STATES YEAR 2000 INFORMATION AND READINESS DISCLOSURE ACT, 15 U.S.C. 1 NOTE (1998). THIS STATEMENT AND ALL OTHER STATEMENTS REGARDING YEAR 2000 ARE FOR YOUR INFORMATION ONLY AND DO NOT BECOME A PART OF ANY CONTRACT OR WARRANTY. YOU SHOULD NOT RELY ON THEM IN ENTERING INTO OR EXTENDING ANY CONTRACT. THE CONTRACT LANGUAGE ALONE CONTROLS.
