eLife Takes Stock of Its New Publishing Model

eLife is reflecting on the first year of its new publishing model, which eliminated accept/reject decisions after peer review, in two new articles.

eLife’s New Model: One Year On” states, “On January 31 2023, we launched our new model for publishing, combining the speed and transparency of preprints with the expert scrutiny and evaluation of peer review. We committed to publish everything that we reviewed. We would publish preprints together with public reviews and assessments. By doing so we would reshape the purpose of a journal.”

eLife’s editorial leadership chimed in with “Scientific Publishing: The First Year of a New Era,” writing, “A lot has happened over the past year but, for us, the highlights have been that thousands of authors have put their trust in these new publishing ideas, and that our editors and reviewers have invested their time and energy to make the new system work.”
